The local basketball Mason
bowed out successfully Friday
night when Medford high school
took a 01 to 49 victory over a
scrappy Ashland high quintet on
the high school maple boards. It
was a Southern Oregon comer
ence game.
It was not alt Medford by any
means, as the score might indi
cate. The lead changed hands
three times in the first quarter
before Medford could get things
under control. Bob Watson
scored the game's first point
when he rang up a gift toss on
Jim Jandreau's free throw but
Cal Hovland put the Grizzlies In
the lead with a basket. Jand-
reau stole the ball and broke
Into the clear for a lay-in to
move the count to 4 to 1 for the
Lithla City lads. Watson got a
push shot and sank a free toss
of Hovland'a foul to even the
score.
Provost Takes Lead
With about a minute of the
first quarter left to play, Jand
reau again broke Into the clear
for a lay-in to knot the count
at 12-12 and Dommie Provost
sank Darrell Rlggs' foul to make
It 13-12 for Ashland. Seconds
before the period ended Earl
Stelle dropped in a field goal to
give the Black Tornado a 14 to
13 first quarter advantage.
Stelle opened the second
stanza with one from the corner
and Jandreau sank one to make
It 18-18 for Medford. Watson
got two baskets and the Tornado
began to roll and held advant
ages of 28 to.1T, 28 to 22 and 20
to 28 before the first half came
to an end with Medford holding
a mere three point edge 30 to
27.
The Ashland quint had appar
ently given its all in the first
half for they wilted badly at the
outset of the third stanza. Med
ford ran the score to 38 before
Len Williams chalked up a pair
or rieia goals for the Llthlans.
Carl Reich, Jim Cave, Bill Sing
ler and Jerry Ross looped in
points to bring the third quarter
count to 43 to 38.
Tornado Holds Edge
During most of the final
period It was basket for basket
but the Tornado managed to
throw In enough extra points
here and there to run their mar
gin up to Id-point advantage
by the time the gam cam to

Little Ben Hogan maintained his
two-stroke lead with a 54-hole
total of 200 today as he fired his
second consecutive three under
par 69 In the third round of the
$7,500 New Orleans open.
The Hcrshey, Pa., bantam's
machine-like putting held him
in good stead as he maintained
his second round margin over
Byron Nelson of Toledo, O.,
lB45's leading money winner.
Nelson also shot his second
straight 69, but trailed In second
place with 211 after the 54-hole
mark.
And It seemed as though Nel
son's poor start with a one over
par 73 the first day will hamper
him until the end of this tournament.
Bunched behind Hogan and
kelson were Harold (Jug) Mc-
Spaddcn, of Sanford, Me., and
Sammy Snead, of Hot Springs,
Va. They were tied for third
place with 219. McSpaden was
two under par with a 70 today
and Snead shot an even-par 72.
