BARRACKS MAY
BE GIVEN STATE
Salem, Feb. 14 Possibility
that the marine barracks at
Klamath Falls, together with all
of its facilities, may be turned
over to the state of Oregon, free
of charge, for utilization by the
state board of higher education
in coping with the increasing
educational demands of return
ing service men and Nvomen,
was announced by Governor
Earl Snell here Wednesday.
Inspection of the barracks re
cently was made by Dr. A. L,
Strand, Oregon State college;
Dean Earl Pallctt, representing
Dr. Harry Newburn, University
of Oregon; Dr. Charles Byrne,
secretary of the state board of
higher education, and Dr. John
Cramer, dean of general exten
sion. They were accompanied
by State Budget Director Aiken
who represented Governor
Snell.
The Klamath Falls institution
Governor Snell said, is one of
the most elaborate of its kind in
the country and represents an
expenditure of between $6,000,-
000 and $7,000,000.
Sixty-five major structures
arc included along with the
largest dining room ever built
by the navy. There also is an
auditorium with a seating ca
pacity of 1100, gymnasium, mod
ern theater, huge swimming
pool, class rooms, vocational
training setups, hospital and in
firmary and other facilities.
Governor Snell said the board
of higher education probably
would be faced with certain
problems and details of adminis
tration and finance, but these
could be worked out.

Heirs of the late Franklin D
Roosevelt have appealed to the
New York state tax commission
to rule that the president died
soldier, it was learned reliably
today.
Through Basil O'Connor, law
partner of the late president, the
estate contends that the presi
dent's role as commander-in-chief
of the armed forces en
titles the heirs to a substantial
state and federal Income tax
exemption.
The exemption would amount
to thousands of dollars on the
late president's Income from his
family holdings and his salary
as president.
Pedro Garces was the first
white man to cross the Kern
River, Calif., In 1776.
