This is the town of Casa Grande en route to Phoenix from
Tucson, but the Indian ruins of that name are over by the town
of Coolidge, 25 miles away. '
So one finds the town of Coolidge on the same map ana
naturally concludes the famed Coolidge dam it near there. But
It isn't. It Is over 100 miles away. This is something for the AAA
to get busy about when they get out their post-war maps.

was no capitalism in those far-off days here in the U. S. A.,
none whatever. The Indians owned their land In common, as well
as the products of the land, corn, cotton and hay. They also
owned their irrigation system In common, yes, they had an
Irrigation system, fed by the Gila river and it was a good one.
They owned everything In common except their women, their
weapons and their cattle and goats. They had no horses then,
horses were brought In by the Spaniards. But when they did get
horses, these were private property also, In some tribes the
squaws owned the cattle and goats, the braves the horses, the
reason being the women did the milking, butchering and all the
hard home work, while the men

It was Interesting to walk through this adobe "big house"

of life that really went on within

We left Tucson early, and as when we left Medford also early,
the "Bad Ship Sedan" refused to start. So we decided the tem
perature rather than any mechanical difficulty or perhaps both,
had caused this perverse behavior. A taxi was available to push
this time, so no hour was lost as In front of Valentine's, two
weeks ago. (Great Pete, Is It two or three weeks? Seems like a
year!) We ran Into the S.P. train coming south from Phoenix and
looked for some familiar Medford faces at the wlrdows Heinle

at that hour, but none appeared. Long Icicles were hanging
from the Pullman rods, and the ponds of water In the fields were
frozen over. Nothing exactly tropical about Arizona In winter,

In one of the cotton fields by the highway some white-faced
uteers were enjoying themselves eating the stray cotton that had
not been picked. That Is our idea of a rather UNpalatable diet,
eating cotton without even skimmed milk and brown sugar to
assist!
Which reminds us of something for Ripley. In the Santa Rita
drug storo In Tucson, which serves soft drinks and light meals,
that last morning, there was no butter never did have any, no
sugar, no chocolate or vanilla flavoring!
We remember years ago Weber and Fields had a soda fountain
scene where Fields asked for a chocolate soda and the beautiful
but dumb waitress said they didn't carry chocolate, considered
very funny In those days, but nothing In the food or drink line

TO RULE RIVERS

Former Gov. Ralph L. Carr of
Colorado charged today that
bills proposing creation of
authorities similar to the TV A
throughout the country were
"the longest step ever taken to
ward unseating our theory of
government." ,
Carr, long an attorney special
izing In irrigation . problems,
made his attack on river authori
ties at the closing day's sessions
of a meeting here of the Color
ado River Water Users' associa
tion. The former Colorado Republi
can chief executive said he
didn't think that the people of
the country would "take these
authority proposals lying down."
"There is no need for such
authorities," he asserted. 'The
states and Individuals with al
ready established government
agencies can do the Job."
Carr was particularly pointed
in attacking the Rankin proposal
for creation of nine TVA-like
authorities that would embrace
virtually every stream In the
nation.
