Lefty 0'Doul Picks Los Angeles
As Team To Beat in Coming Season
By Hal Wood
United Press Sports Writer
San FrancUco, Feb. 13 (U.R)
Frank "Lefty" O'Doul reluctant
ly put himself out on a limb to
day by picking the Los Angcle:
Angels as the team to beat this
year In the Pacific Coast base
ball league.
The San Francisco Seals man
nger also selected the Oakland
Oaks and the Portland Beavr
for first division berths, but di
clined to predict where his club
would finish.
He expressed confidence, how
ever, that the Seals team will
be the best in years.
The first official "pick" of the
embryo baseball season was
made last night at a dinner giv
en by O Doul and Seals Presi
dent Charley Graham for base
ball writers.
He based his choice of Los An
geles on the fact that the Angels
would have a lot of pre-war ba!
players back in the fold come
opening day.
O'Doul wouldn't "rate" other
league clubs, pointing out that
they all probably would be much
better than last year.
The defending champion Port
land Beavers will be exception
ally tough, O'Doul said, because
they arc expected to have an
even better pitching staff this
year than the one that hurled
them to the pennant last season
Latest moundsmen to join the
Beavers was Forrest Orrell, back
from the Detroit Tigers.

His big eyes and happy smile peer

stealing hearts of Seattleites.
With an air of nonchalance j

said he wished I would cut his

"Triangle sandwiches bite bet

my risibles I failed to recognize
this incident as one of the signs

to be a major issue in our fam

A day or so later I was told,
"Oscar has pie as well as cake

"Most of the men have dates

Thus was it finally brought

Grooming the Barber entry,
there was fire in my eye as well
as. the kitchen range as I baked
pie, cake, cookies and tarts.
Sandwich filling was, progress
ively, potted ham, bologna, roast
beef then turkey. Beyond the
latter I could not go. Also I put
in nuts, though these were for
efefct only since the logger in
our family has lately acquired
"plates." As yet these grow skit
tish when applied to nuts. But
this has its points, as I can put
in the same batch of nuts, day
after day.
I felt divinely inspired the
day i thought to put in a napkin.
But that night I was told never
to do so again; no self-respecting
logger ever used a napkin. But
I might add some homemade
marshmallows; Gene's wife made
them; pink ones.
