to correct an error which has
crept into the
method or
technique fol

American Red
Cross and var

Dr. Brady. wrong they
accept or approve because they
know no better. If thisx sounds
at all out of line or if you ask
who am I to take this attitude
in respect to such organizations
as, say, the U. S. Army Medical
Department, the U. S. Navy
Medical Department, the U. S.
Public Health Service, the Bur
eau of Mines, the American Gas
Association etc., etc., I can't
give you further details here,
but drop in some time and' I'll
show you in my files what I
mean. Official records of these
organizations show, I venture to
say, that they didn't know what
it was all about when they ac
cepted and approved the erratic
Red Cross technique many
years ago.
Some years ago I appealed to
the man I considered the great
est authority In the country, in
deed a recognized world author
ity on resuscitation. Prof. Yan
dell Henderson (now deceased)
for his support. Professor Hen
derson was a kindly man, whom
I greatly admired, and back in
1912 he and Prof. W. B. Can
non of Harvard and Prof.
George B. Crile of Northwest
ern and half a dozen other re
cognized authorities approved
resuscitation instructions 'pub
lished by the National Electric
Light Association, with pictures
showing both of the subject's
arms drawn well up above the
head and nothing under the
subjects head . the correct
Schafer method.
But some time later the Red
Cross (as nearly as I can learn,
for nobody will acknowledge
responsibility) introduced the
modification to which I object
placing one of the subjects
arms under the head and ap
parently all of the organiza
tions or their medical represen
tatives accepted the modifica
tion and "approved" the Red
Cross technique without any
question.
But, while Prof. Henderson
agreed with me that the correct
position both of subject's arms
extended well above head
placid the subject's thorax or
chest in more favorable position
for entrance of air into the
lungs, still he doubted that the
water-trap caused by lifting the
head upon the subject's arm was
important, for, he said, it had
been shown in the laboratory
that a little water in the lung
is rapidly absorbed anyway.
Prof. Henderson did not say
just how long It would take to
absorb a little water if some got
into the 'lung, nor did he say
what the subject was going to
do for air while we wait for the
water to be absorbed. I couldn't
say to such a man "Aw, tell that
to the marines!" or anything
