Return Of Center Jump Sought By
Mid-West's Outstanding Coaches
Chicago, Feb. 12 (U.R) A
campaign to return the center
jump to basketball was started
today by 'two of the mid-west'a
outstanding coaches, Arthur
(Dutch) Lonborg of Northwest
ern and Ray Meyer of Depaul.
Lonborg and Meyer both have
experienced great success in
coaching since the advent of
"race horse basketball," but
now believe the game should be
slowed down and that the re
turn of the center jump is the
most effective means of accom
plishing this objective.
The center jump was eliminat
ed from the basketball code in
1937 and since then the premi-

"Basketball is a game subject
to cycles of style," Lonborg said,
"and I believe the time is at
hand for us to slow the game
down. The emphasis before 1937
was on dcliberateness and to
such an extent that some said
the sport was losing Its appeal.
There is no question about bas
ketball being a spectator sport,
but I believe the pendulum has
swung too far to the side of
speed, with the result that there
is a danger of the current style
generating into one of monot
ony. I believe the return of the
center jump would do much to
slowing the game down, without
destroying any of Its appeal.

ford high school court Thursday
night, beginning at 8 o'clock. A
preliminary pitting the sopho
mores of Medford high against
the Junior varsity will get under
way at 8:45 p. m.
The bewhiskcrcd Davids travel
by auto and play every night
averaging 125 games per sea
son, and covering over 20,000
miles. Starling Nov. 27, they al
ready have pluycd through Ohio
Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Min
nesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyo
mlng, Utah, Montana, Washing
ton and Oregon. They have an

George Anderson, guard, has
been manager of the team since
1937 with the exception of three
years spent In the army. He Is
a member of the Israelite Colony
at Benton Harbor, Mich. He also
plays on the House of David base
ball team and will be In charge
of that group next spring when
they take to the road for the

Their roster boasts several big-
nnmo college stars from the mid
west and east. who have been
stars of the maple court for the
past several seasons.
The Elks' last big test came
when they defeated the highly
regarded Klamath Falls Marines

A last half rally gave the Med
ford High cage crew a 49-42

ian floor last night.

point advantage in the fourth
canto before reserves took over.
Earl Stellc, substitute guard,
spurred the Medford attack with
13 markers while Bob Watson
and Derrell Riggs each whipped
in 11. In spite of this high scor
ing the Tornado chalked up a
poor field goal percentage, hit
ting only 20 out of 73 attempts.
Last night's battle was a non
league fray and the teams meet
for blood In a final conference

FIXING PENALTIES
Baltimore, Feb. 12 (U.B
Seven steeplechase riders, a
trainer, and a jockey's agent
awaited a decision from the
Maryland Racing commission
today, which probably will bar
them from the turf for life if
they are found guilty of "fixing"
a race for a sensational betting
coup last Nov. 30.
All of the jockeys admitted
complicity in the deal which
also involved two unidentified
gamblers, who allegedly placed
bets of more than $3,000 in
order to insure the outcome of
the race. The bets were made
for the Jockeys, the trainer, and
the agent1 and on the basis of
the $5.20 payoff for the winning
horse, "Mamie's Lad," would
have netted them more than
$8,000.
How much more the unidenti
fied gamblers and others who
knew about the "fix" wagered
on the race probably will never
be determined, but it was estab
lished in the hearing before the
commission that the horse was
backed down to a price of 8 to
5 after being 10 to 1 in the morn
ing line.

the Pacific Coast Professional
football league predicted today
that the National league would
grant a franchise to the San
Francisco Clippers "In the not
too distant future."
Klawans was in Sacramento
today investigating two requests
for a Sacramento franchise.
George Theodoratas, former
Washington State football and
boxing star, and Dave Kcllv, of
the Sacramento entry In the
American basketball league.
both sought a franchise in that
city.
Approval of one or the other
application would boost league
membership to ten teams, in
cluding Portland, Seattle. Oak
land. San Francisco, Sacramen
to. Hollywood, Los Angeles, San
Diego, Salt Lake City and Honolulu.
