But with those nightmare, as a background, this "bed-and-bath

That last night In the "dormitory" WAS something to write

Panhandle dust and full of cactus juice. One of them was a new -paper
man who came close to taking a Job with General Jackson .
papa on the Albany (Oregon) Democrat some 20 years ago. and
was determined to celebrate the fact he didn't. For now he i,
part owner of some paper in Texas, has a cattle ranch and may
one of his friends told us this. be governor of his state some day.
Probably hi. enthusiasm wa. justified, but how does he know he
wouldn't have done better in the Willamette Valley,-with the
able Messrs. Jackson and Cronlse to help him?

When he discovered he was talking to a newspaper man from
Oregon he wanted to know all about things up there; how deep
does the water get In these floods, can one use a speed-boat much,
and is there good flood-fishing? He had a wonderful time on
this fruitful topic and of course as there have been some floods
in Oregon this year (for the first time, we believe, in a couple of
decades) yours truly was at a certain disadvantage, in a natural
effort to tone down our colleague's Texas enthusiasm, and reveal
the truth that one country paper in Southern Oregon is to be
preferred to a chain in the great area and sun-baked state of Texas.

There was a great sigh of relief from Bed No. I when the
Texas group decided to seek an Arizona "short-horn" steak dinner
at one of the many caravanserles along the Speedway, and de
parted leaving a trail of dust, and aroma of fermented cactus Juice
behind them. Still following our practice of getting into Bed No.
1 early and arising ditto, there was a natural apprehension as to
Just when the Texas boys would rolurn, and a feverish determina
tion to become unconscious before that time. Of course, as any
one informed regarding the psychology of sleep" knows, this was
fatal, for nothing "murthers sleep" In "Macbeth" or out of it,
as does a DETERMINATION to achieve it. So Ye Editor was
quite conscious when the steak and spirltus frumenti-fillcd Texas
delegation returned.
Well, let's be fair.
It won't make a. good a story, but the fact Is the boys from
Texas did pretty well and at least once every minute one of them
would remark In a stage-whisper that could have registered on a
dictaphone down at the S.P. depot, "S-S-S-H, go easy boys,
some o' these guys is trying to sleep around here!"
But take any half-dozen well-fed and well-plastered males en
gaged in the arduous task of disrobing in the dark in a strange
flop-house. (Excuse, Nick, we meant "dormitoryl") and there
could hardly be anything soothing or actually soporific about It.
Moreover, a robust Texas whisper creates almost as much of a
disturbance In the circumambient air-waves as an equally robust
Texas snore. With six of them whispering violently throughout
this disrobing performance, and then, one by one, falling promptly
into the Texas snore-routine, well, the subsequent period until
sunrise was something to long remember, and write home about
If one', home can not be easily disturbed!
Then there was the late arrival.
Whether he was a solo performer detached from the "Lone
Star" brigade or not, we never determined, but he certainly was
well loaded.
We could hear him stumbling up the hall and tripping heavily
over the entrance steps, then In came a tall, shadowy figure, tot
tering along, but apparently with a definite purpose in mind,
that wa. to find an empty bed. The visitor took off hi. "Stetson"
and kicked his way from cot to cot, peering through the dimness
to detect whether there was a head on the pillow or not. We
hoped (and quite, seriously) that some of our room-mates would

For the two or three weeks of
the rainy season there was less
sunshine than we have the rest
of the year. The Wisacre family
might have been away on a Jour
ney so far as signs of life around
their house indicated. But after
the rains ceased and the sun
shone again Mrs. Wiseacre as
sured a neighbor who inquired
anxiously about the children
that they were all right, only it
had been so damp lately that
they kept the children indoors
so much flu around, you
know.
Probably millions of unhappy
Wiseacre kids are cooped up in
doors for months wherever there
is real winter weather. I'm sorry
for the kids, but, you see, their
parents, grandmas, grandpas, un
cles, aunties, yes, and the neigh
bors, too, deem it reprehensible

to permit a child to go out to
play when the ground Is damp
or the air is cold or when the
weather is at all unpleasant
for the old fogies.

Of course you know what happened.
The Inebriated cowhand reached Bed No. II, gave It the once
over, then without more ado proceeded to .it down on it. He sat
there for so long a time we wondered if he might be one of those
fortunate individuals Uncle Ransom used to tell us boys about,
who could sleep sitting on a horse that was during the Civil war.
But it soon became evident he was engaged In the difficult task of
pulling off his boots. And in his condition and perhaps also the
condition of the boots, it was apparently tough going. The
visitor wa. tugging harder and harder and we felt sure was getting
madder and madder.
And now we come to the part of the story which few of the
assembled multitude will believe. Nevertheless we have a wit
ness, at least one who will give corroborative evidence, unless she
lose, her Job, the Mexican chamber-maid.
The boots finally were off, the owner of them, waiting some
time to get his breath or perhaps his equilibrium, then arose
with one boot in his hand and proceeded to throw it out of the
open window. Ho did the same with the other boot. We waited
for a sound of breaking glass from the skylight below if any,
or a dull thud on the first floor roof but a police-car siren walled
from the street at that time, and none was heard. Apparently
highly satisfied with that accomplishment our next door neighbor
proceeded to stretch out on the bed, pull up the rumpled covers
and in not less than 16 seconds, start to snore! Yes, a night long
to rcmemberl
It Is raining pitchforks today, the first day since crossing the
Sisklyous the sun has not shone. And the prediction Is for "much
colder" when the skies clear. Well, It the prediction holds, and
weather reports here in Arizona are among tha most accurate in
the country, then it will be plenty cold. For the plain truth Is
there hasn't been any warmth down here this winter, nor in
California for that matter. In fact, when we passed through
Fresno, known to some as the blast-furnace of the San Joaquin
we saw something we never suspected could ever come about.
Men's store windows filled with WOOLEN union suits for three,
four and five dollars! We were there tor lunch and an overcoat
felt good.
And except for Sunday here, when the wind blew up a terrible
dust-storm and it was around 70, it ha. been more like a clear
winter in New EnRland, than February in .unny Arizona. They
say this has been more or less true ever since fall. Not that this
department would complain, for we rather like cool weather If
and when the sun shines. But the local tourists from Chicago and
wav-atntlohs are eomnlalnlna they came here for sun-bathing and
unless tht-y have their own solarlums, it is too nippy to un bathe

The senate today killed all
chances of passing fair employ
ment legislation in this session
by defeatirj an effort to break
a 24-day southern democratic
filibuster against the measure.
A motion to limit debate on
a bill to establish a permanent
fair employment practice com
mission failed to win the neces
sary two-thirds majority.
After the vote. Sen. Dennis
Chavez. D.. N. M.. the FEPC
bill's sponsor, moved to drop It.
Chavez said he was "perfect
ly satisfied" with the debate
limitation vote and added bit
terly:
"The civil war proved that
this can not 'e a divided coun
trv. America will go on, but
we can not have one country
for the south and one for the
rest."
The vote was a complete vic
tory for southern democratic
senators.

be it canned stuff or neighbors.
Just as some days i crave

times when only my tart-spoken

she is as refreshing to my spirit
as the tomatoes are to my paiate.
I can go to her with a bad taste
in my mental mouth and after
an hour's visit feel as chipper as
Ophelia, the red hen, than which
there is nothing chipperer. A
potent pick-me-up, that neighbor.
Then there will come along a
sunshiney, growing-weather sort
of day. Right away I become
infected with garden ambitions.
though the month be January
I develop 'what you might call
farmitism. Now ii this comes
in the proper season, I can go
to the garden and work it off.
Otherwise, I go to another neigh
bor and talk it off instead, l
couldn't go to Mrs. Tomato in
that mood. I have tried it a time
or so and got no comfort; only
spiritual hives. But Mrs. Farmer
and I get as much enjoyment out
of verbal agriculture as loggers
seem to do out of their logging
activities around the bunkhouse.
Then there is the Serious
Citizen neighbor. She knows
exactly What the Nation Needs
to Do. You can't imagine what
comfort this is at times. Shp
takes her citizenship very seri
ously and keeps track of just
what senators vote for which
She and her voting-age children
consider the ballot a high pri
vilege and though they seldom
back the same candidate, or the
same side of an issue, yet they
vote to the last man. As they
collectively gnaw on the latest
political bone of contention.
there is no demand on her part
that her word is final because
she ' is their mother. Instead.
there is a mutual respect; respect
for each others thought pro
cesses and opinions. This family
makes me think of my cans of
meat full of solid substance.
And, of course, I know Just
the neighbor to go to when I
feel hungry for shall we say
the condiments of life.. You
know; spicey; even a bit racey,
After a visit with her my spirit
has a naughty fizz to it. That
was a fine tale she told! Wonder
if it is true. I wouldn't put it
past that man to behave exactly
as she said he did!
