Kerby Wins First Conference
Game of Season By Up
setting Eagle Point 35-27
In order to speed up the South
ern Oregon "B" league games In
time to have the championship
playoff over before the Southern
Oregon College of Education's
class "B" tournament at Ashland
March 6, 7, 8 and 9, all games
scheduled for March 1 will be
played Feb. 12, it was announce
today. The championship play
off will be Feb. 25 and 26, prob
ably at the Medford high school
gym.
Rogue River, Feb. 9 Blasting
out a 26-20 victory over Central
Point Friday night, Rogue River
high's cage quintet went into a
first place tie with the Pointers
in the southern Oregon class "B"
league's division two.
The Rogues entered the final
frame with an 18-15 advantage
after holding Central Point to
a lone gift . shot, in the third
canto. A field goal by Hargus
Colley and a free toss by Bill
Saxbury enabled the Pointers to
even up the count. Dick Hun
toon and Bruce Davidson each
sank lay-ins for Rogue River be
fore the automatic breather to
make the score 22-18. Les Han
sen looped one in for Central
Point's final tally and Iluntoon
came back with another for the
winners. Don Dick of Rogue
River dropped in the only goal
after the official time-out.
First quarter of the contest
ended 8-5 and the Pointers led
14-13 at the half. Although the
losers held usually high-scoring
Dick Hunloon to five field goals,
the towering Rogue pivot man
netted six points in the last half
when they were most needed.
Rogue River won, 23-22, In the
prelim between the schools' re
serve fives.
An over-capacity crowd that
surged on to the playing floor In
one corner of the gym witnessed
the fracas. Each team now has
five wins and one loss in the con

high school chalked up its first
conference basketball win of the
season by slamming Eagle Point,
35-27, here Friday evening. The
visitors grabbed a comfortable
lead early in the fray and main
tained it throughout. Margin of
the victors at half-time was 24
16. Kerby came out on top, 13
12, in the curtain-raiser between
the second teams.

AS RACE FIXERS
Baltimore, Feb. 9 (U.R)
Seven jockeys, a jockey agent
and a trainer will be given a
hearing before the Maryland
Racing commission Monday on
charges of fixing a race at Plm-
lico. Commission Chairman
George Mahoney announced today.
Six of the jockeys had mounts
in the race alleged fixed, a
steeplechase on Nov. 30, 1945.
The race was won by Mamie's
Lad with Gala Reign second and
Meetinghouse third.

Medford high's basketball
crew cinched the Southern Ore
gon conference championship
here Friday night when they
chalked up a 48 to 38 victory
over Klamath Falls in a fast
stepping game. The Black Tor
nado has one league game yet
to play, with Ashland here next
Friday night, hut a loss to the
Grizzlies would not affect Med
ford 's first place spot in the
lcariue standings.
Jerry Ross started the scor
Ing with a gift toss and the Tor
nado ran up a 6-0 lead before
Thorn, lanky Klamath center,
could put his team in the scor
ing column with a shot from
under the basket. The Pelicans
brought the count to 8-5 for
Medford and then tied it 7-7
before Hover made good a free
throw on Carl Reich's foul to
give the Klamath county boys
a one point lead at end of the
initial quarter.
Score Tied
That was the only time Klam
ath Falls led in the game al
though they tied the count at
11-11 shortly after the second
quarter started. The Tornado
pulled slowly away from the tie
and built up a 2b to 16 halftime
advantage.
After the third stanza got
underway Bob Watson and Earl
Stelle ran Medford's edge to 27
before Hover could hit for the
Pels. Medford, paced with bas
kets by Ross, Derrill Riggs and
Bill Singler, took the count to
35 and 25 at end of the third
period. With Riggs and Ross
doing the scoring, the Red and
Black made it 40 to 25 shortly
after the final quarter got under
way but Thorn, Coleman and
Palmer connected to make it 46
to 36 with a minute and a half
left to play. Each team looped
in a basket In the waning sec
onds to bring the final count to
48-38.
Jay-Vees Beaten
Playing without the services
of three regulars who were
benched by disciplinary action,
the Medford Junior varsity
dropped a 34 to 30 decision to
the Klamath Wildcats In the
preliminary.

Red Dawson, a rough and
tough logger from Michigan,
will make, his local debut when
he meets Sgt. Bob Kenaston of
Gold Hill in the opening bout of
Wednesday night's wrestling
card at Medford armory, Pro
moter Mack Lillard said yester
day. Dawson, , a wild and
rugged campaigner, will give
Kcnaston's comeback return a
severe test. The Gold Hill
marine appeared in good shape
in his return to the , mat last
week and showed a lot of his
former style but will have to be
on his toes if he wants to get
over Dawson.
An old favorite of the local
tug and haul emporium, Cow
boy Dude Chick, will make his
first local appearance in several
years when he goes against
Steve Petroff in the semi-wind-up.
Petroff, a tough customer
in his own right, will have his
hands full with tho airplane
spin specialist who has lost none
of his former color, according to
those who have seen him in
action lately.
The six round main event pro
mises a lot of fast and clever
grappling when "Jumping Joe"
Lynam, coast junior heavy
weight champion, locks grips
with Gust Johnson of Seattle.
Johnson formerly held the belt
and his boring-in style is the
same as Lynam's which should
make for an interesting set-to.

North Carolina's basketball
team handed navy Its first de
feat of the season today, 51 to
49, leaving the nation without
a major unbeaten college team.
The Tarheels, putting on a big
second" half rally clinched the
victory after being behind at half
time.
The midshipmen had scored
eight successive victories before
today's engagement. North Caro
lina's record now stands at 22
wins and two defeats.

The Medford Athletic associa
tion's Athlete of the Month
award went out of town for the
second straight month when it
was voted yesterday to give the
January laurels to Jim Johnson,
substitute forward on the Ore
gon State Rooks basketball
team. Johnson scored 19 points
when his team lost to Medford
high school 50 to 49 here Jan.
19. His achievements were
voted to be the most outstand
ing of any athlete, either ama
teur or professional, to perform
here during the month.
The award is presented
monthly to the most outstanding
athlete to perform in a local
sports program.

Two men who figure promin
ently in the infield plans of
Manager Leo Durocher of the
Brooklyn Dodgers this season
signed their 1946 contracts to
day. They were Pee Wee Reese,
recently discharged from the
navy and the Dodgers' regular
shortstop before he went Into
service and Stan Rojek, consid
ered one of the outstanding
minor league players while at
Montreal before he joined the
army.
Reese was among the few
players in the Dodger party
