Overseas Heavy
The U. S. Department ol Agri
culture recently reported the de
liveries during November
government-owned food tor for-
eien ahlDment. The total was
nearly 287 million pounds 143,
500 tons. The largest Item was
grain about 60 per cent. Dairy
products rated second at IS per
cent, meats third at 10 per cent,
sugar S per cent, fruits and vege
tables 2 per cent, poultry 1 per
cent, fats and oils 1 per cent, and
special commodities i per cent.
Tobacco about 64,000 pounds ac
counted for less than 1 per cent
of the overseas food shipments,
About three-fifths of the for
eign shipment was divided
among the United Kingdom and
British Service overseas. Less
than 10 per cent was for Russia
and the balance nearly one
third was divided among for
eign claimants. These Included
Metropolitan France, French
West Africa, French North Afri
ca, French Colonial Supply Mis-
s i o n, Czechoslovakia, Italy,
Netherlands. Belgium Nether
lands Asiatic Colonies, Norway,
Sweden, British Colony Supply
Mission, British Dominions and
Colonies, Iceland Purchasing
Commission, and the Philippines,

Oregon farmers are apparent
ly doing more and more conser
vation work under the stimulus
of financial aid from the AAA
practice payments. The state
committee has just completed
the annual summary of work
done under the 194S agricultur
al conservation practice pro
gram. This report shows that
toil and water conservation work
costing more than 6V4 million
dollars was performed by Ore-
con farmers and ranchers last
year under the program.
Of this amount the AAA prac
tice payments will care for $2,
600,000. Under ordinary condi
tions the AAA payments would
handle about 00 per cent of the
total work done. The amount of
such funds for each county la
- limited, however, hence the per
centage Is governed by the total
amount of work done. The new
Oregon agricultural conserva
tion program for 1D46 contains
36 practices from which county
I committees may choose. Six new
practices have been added this
year while seven In the program
last year have been dropped,

Shortages
There were no reported short
ages of hay In the northwest dur
ing the first week In February
according to the weekly hay
market review prepared by the
OSC extension service from
USDA market reports and other
data. In California however
market supplies were far below
trade needs.
Prices throughout the Pacific
Coast area were at celling levels.
At Portland No. 2 or better al
falfa was quoted at $32 to $34
a ton wholesale. Producers in
the Willamette Valley were still
asking around $24 a ton to the
farm for oat and vetch mixed
hay. Growers in the Yakima
valley were being offered $18 to
$18 ton In the stack for alfalfa
comparable to the U, S. No. 2
green.
Receipts for the week at Port
land totaled 10 cars, all from
eastern Oregon producing areas.
The continued adequate hay
supply situation In the North
west reflects the large crop of
1B4S and moderate usage to
date. Production In Oregon and
Washington in 1045 was slightly
above the large crop of 1S44 and
well above average. The Idaho
crop, however, fell below that of
1944 and below average. The
combined production of the
three states was 6,249,000 tons,
only 2 per cent above 1044 but
8 per cent above average.
The 194S hay crop of the Unit
ed Slates was one of the largest
crops on record. It totaled near
ly 105,000,000 tons, 7 per cent
above 1944 and 20 per cent
above the 1934-1943 average.
Movement of hay In the east,
however, has been difficult be
cause of the car shortage and
tome arras report very short
market supplies.

Valentine Day
Festive Occasion
Valentine Day Is always a
party occasion for young and old
alike. If you are planning such
festivities for Grange, church or
other large group, the extension
mimeograph on Valentine pro
gram suggestions will be help
ful. It Includes several recita
tions and a short skit. There are
two other mimeographs of party
ideas, including Invitations,
games and refreshments suitabl
for your Valentine party. These
are Valentine party suggestions
and February parties.
Any of these mimeographs are
available at the Obi; extension
office in the courthouse.
If, after your Valentine party
or birthday party, you find can
dle wax on the tablecloth, call
on a dull knife, a warm Iron and
cleansing tissues to help remove
it. First, scrape off as much of
the hard wax as possible with a
dull knife. Then place the stain
between cleansing tissues or pa
per towels, and press with
warm iron, changing the paper
as it becomes soiled. Finally,
sponge with a grease solvent.

If the wax is dropped on the
rug, the procedure for removing
it is Just the same. Scrape off
the excess, then sponge with
carbon tetrachloride or some
other solvent. If color still
shows, use the water and alco
hol solution.
Allow For Growth
In Making Clothes
When you sew for your little
girl allow for her to growl
Before you cut the garment
plan ways to lengthen it later.
Here arc some hints from your
home demonstration agent.
First pick a style that al
lows for growth In the chest and
shoulders. Then allow a 5-inch
hem In the dress. This will give
it wearability even though small
daughter shoots up In height al
most as fast as Jack's beanstock.
Cut her slips 2 or 3 Inches
longer than she'll need for a fit
when they're new. Then with
long, loose machine stitches, sew
an Inside tuck Just above the bot
tom ruffle.
Cut panties a couple of Inches
longer than she will need for a
good fit between the waistline
nd the crotch. Then take up
this excess with an Inside tuck.
Be sure you put the tuck where
it doesn't make the garment too
bulky.
It isn t so easy to allow for
growth In boys' clothing as It
in girls . But you can make
the straps on little brother's
overalls adjustable. One way Is
place two or three button
holeslengthwise at the end
of the straps. Another way Is to
work the buttonhole In the bib
of the overall and leave room to
move the buttons to the end of
the strap as brother adds inches
and you need to make the over
alls longer. -

While the city treasury ac
cumulated a larger balance for
the six months ending December
31, 1945, than during the pre
vious period, Medford's bonded
Indebtedness increased accord
ing to the semi-annual report by
Treasurer Oris Crawford.
Balance on December 31 was
$845,577.88 which compared
with $402,590.98 on June 30,
1945. Bonded indebtedness rose
from $730,920.03 to $908,929.03
In the period because of new
issues for park Improvement,
storm sewer, sanitary sewer and
sewage plant amounting to $225,-
000. Redemption on bonds dur
ing the last six months was $49,-000.
According to the report the
city has investments in the sum
of $81,000 Receipts in the last
half of 1945 were $572,859.06
while disbursements were $329,-872.14.

into large bowl with baking powder,
