CONTRACTS LACK
MAJOR LEAGUES

With the southward trek for
spring training already under
way, the 16 major league base
ball clubs have signed only about
one fourth of their players to
1946 contracts, a United Press
survey showed tonight.
The active rosters of the Amer-
i ican and National league teams,
as of today, listed a total of 854
players and only the signing of
252 of them has been announc
ed. .
That does not mean the rest
602 are holdouts, although
there are indications that there
is going to be a bumper crop of
players demanding moru money
this season. Five clubs, who are
known to have a number of 1046
contracts tucked safely away,
have made no announcements if
signing! as yet. Tiiey Include the
Phillies, who only yesterday sent
out their contracts for the com
ing season.
The eight national league
teams have signed only 82 out
of 441 players while the Amer
ican league clubs have had bet
ter luck with 170 of their 413
players agreeing to terms thus
far.
