Jockeyed for the honor of being
the world capital, 200 residents
asked today that Greenwich be
counted out.
Led by Wilkie Bushby, lawyer
and educator, the group said it
wouldn't want Greenwich to be
the permanent home of the
United Nations Organization
They said they weren't hostile,
but they simply thought the
UNO "plunked down in Green
wlch" would be too disturbing
and would take up too much
space.
They added that it wasn't
case of sour grapes cither. They
said they heard from reliable
sources that their area headed
the list of sites to be recommend
ed to the UNO by the Inspection
committee.

sense failed him.
Blind for the past eight years,
the spunky terrier had escaped
death and injury frequently
while going about his immediate
neighborhood unaided.
But yesterday Skip's sixth
sense failed him when a car
struck him down on a street near
his home.

undernourished Austrian chil
dren between the ages of six
and ten soon will be going from
the American Zone of Occupa
tion to Switzerland and rural
Austria under a new rehabilita
tion progrdm, says a report from
Gen. Mark Clark's headquarters
USFA (United States Forces
Austria).
These children will be sent
away for a period of three
months during which they will
be given increased diets, proper
clothing and medical care. Un
der this scheme, which was
worked out by USFA Public
Welfare representatives, Aus
trian welfare officials and Swiss
charity organizations, 1,429 Aus
trian children already were
transferred to Switzerland dur
ing the .last month, and about
1,000 more are scheduled to go
this month. Additionally, about
another 500 children will be
evacuated from the American
Zone of Occupation to the farm
for the same rehabilitation pur

Hikotaro Tajima, former com
mander of Japanese forces on the
Bataan islands north of Luzon,
waa sentenced today to be hang
ed after a U. S. military court
convicted him of ordering the ex
ecution of three U. S. naval
fliers who were forced down in
November, 1944.
VETERANS RETURN
San Diego, Feb. 1 (U.R) The
USS Wakefield, coast guard-manned
transport, was due here to
day with 6,653 high-point vet
erans, most of them from the
first and sixth marine divisions.
A gala celebration will welcome
the Wakefield and four accom
panying vessels, the destroyers
Orleck and Craig and the YP's

IN LADDER FALL
Griffin Creek, Feb. 1 Mrs.
Harry Wilson, Route 1, suffered
compound fracture of the left
leg Wednesday afternoon when
she fell from a ladder while
pruning In the Wilson orchard
and is now a patient In Sacred
Heart hospital.
Mis. Wilson was alone at the
time of the accident and was
forced to remain in the orchard
for about an hour before attract
ing the attention of Norman
Judy,"- a neighbor. Judy sum
moned John and Myron Meehan,
first aid instructors, who took
the Injured woman to the hospital.
In addition to being clerk of
the school board, Mrs. Wilson is
active in Grange and other
groups of the district.

PRISONER ARRESTED ON
WAY OUT OF STATE PEN
Salem, Feb. 1 (U.R) Virgil
Bchrens has been arrested at the
very gates of Oregon state peni
tentiary Just as he completed
serving a two-year term. He is
accused of assault with a danger
ous weapon within the state
prison.
Behrens, Byron Neil Dyson
and Glenn Wilson have been
charged with stabbing fellow
convicts with home-made knives.
Prison officials report there have
been no fatalities.

Gets Contract For
Work In Pictures

Harold Russell, a former army
sergeant who lost both hands in
a training accident, has accepted
a Hollywood contract to act in
a movie concerning a wounded
veteran returning home.
He will be paid $500 a week
for a minimum of five months
and will appear in the play with
Fredric March and Dana And
rews. Russell was injurea m
Camp McCall, K. C. m June,
1944, when he was hospitalized
for seven months.
After learning to typewrite,
shave, write letters and dress
with the aid of mechanical
hands, he participated in a re
habilitation movie prepared by
the Treasury Department for
the Victory Loan Drive.
At present, Russell is a stu
dent at Boston university. Be
fore the war he was a chain
store meat department manager.
