Your Hsalth and Its Care
By DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D.
Readers should address Inquiries toi Dt. William Brady
264 F. Camlno Ber.rlT Hills Calil.
AS YOU LOOK, AS YOU
Most familiar to doctors, I
suppose, is the saying "A mani
is as old as his arteries" whic
1 had credited
to Dr. Osier,
but I find that
Osier merely
quoted it as m
axiom (he
probably didn't
know its ori
gin) it is not
even mention
ed in Bartlett's
Familiar Quo
tations, but
nftor nil Rart.
Dr. Brady Mt is 'sn00,
about sources and, like most of
the intellectual snobs, rejects
anything anatomical or physio
logical as too vulgar to mention
in polite discourse.
A more modern and worldly
tool maker, Burton Stevenson,
throws some light on it in his
Home Book of Quotations, at
tributing the saying to the late
lamented sage of Battle Creek,
Dr. J. H. Kellogg, who in turn
quoted it from "an eminent
French physiologist" so here
we are again right where we
started. Stevenson further cites
one Mortimer Collins as the im
mortal rhymester who produced
this jingle:
O wherefore our age be reveal
ing?
Leave that to the registry
books!
A man is as old as he's feeling,
A woman as old as she looks.
It was Oliver Wendell Holmes
M.D., who advised people who
want to stay young and live long
to begin a hundred years before
they are born, selecting sound
ancestors.
It was Osier again who said it
depends on the quality of arter
ial-tissue (vital rubber) which
the individual has inherited and
secondly upon the amount of
wear and tear to which he has
subjected it.
There is truth as well as
poetry In all these wise sayings.
Yet when We tote it up it seems
to me that if grandfather was
fairly sober and in fairly good
health the year before father or
mother was born the quality of
vital rubber in the old boy was
not so all-fired Important to me.
Anyway, I'm stuck with what
ever stuff was in me when I
was borr", and from there on
I'm, strictly on my own and
everything depends on the care
I take of my arteries and other
appurtenances as well as wear
and tear.
Whether you are thirty, fifty
or seventy you will learn some
thing to the "advantage of your
arteries and your longevity. 1
sincerely believe, by reading the
booklet "The 7 Keys to Vite"
that is, if you use the keys in
your everyday living. Send
twenty-five cents and stamped
self addressed envelope for the
booklet. Briefly the keys are 1.
Save your teeth; 2. Temperance;
3. Belly Breathing; 4. Nudity;
5. Iodin Ration; 6. Daily exer
