a 73 last round to card a 280

Until yesterday, Toney hadn't
won a major tournament since
1938 when he was low man in
the Kansas City open.
The 39-year-old Itulian came
up to the 18th and final hole
needing a blrdio four to win. A
par five would have dropped
him Into a four way tie for the
title and neccsslated a play-off.
Toney was 75 yards short of
the green on his second shot.
Then, with a gallary of 3,000
crowding around him, he laid a

Schacht, the crown prince of
bajeball, has been voted the Bill
Slocum memorial award present
ed annually for outstanding con
tribution to baseball over a long
period, the new chapter of the
Baseball Writers' Association of
America announced today.
The award, which this year
carries an added citation in tri
bute to Schacht "With stress on
his work during the war," will
be presented to the game's co
median at the annual dinner of
the New York Chapter Feb. 3.
The chapter's other award for
1945, the Sid Mercer memorial
award, formerly known as the
