will be held Monday evening in
I.O.O.F. hall with the Cold Hill
lodge installing team conducting
the ceremony for botli men and
women. Harry Newham of Gold
Hill will act as district deputy

Mcdford will be district deputy
president from Mcdford.
The Joint installation is an an
nual affair and an enjoyable eve
ning is anticipated.

Doris Burils, sister of Calvin
L. Burlis who escaped from the
Jackson county Jail with three
other inmates Jan. 5, has waived
cxtraditio.i and will be returned
here from Susanville, Calif.,
some time next week, Sheriff
Howard Gault faid he was told
by Olin S. Johnson, sheriff of
Lassen county, Calif.
Miss Burtis is wanted by
Jackson county officials for
allegedly smuggling hacksaw
blades into the jail enabling her
brother, Bobby J. Nelson. Roger
Chapman and Edward Mackay
to escape. Chapman and Ma
ckcy, Negroes, were captured
soon after the break for free
dom and Burtis and his sister
were seized at Susanville after
an armed robbery in which
they supposedly took part. Nel
son, thought to be implicated in
the robbery, has not been appre
hended. A cor belonging to Harold
Sutton, 203 North Peach street,
Mcdford, which was stolen by
the Jail breakers, was found in
Burtis' possession at the time of
his arrest.
Burtis, Gault said he learned.
Is being held by the Lassen
County sheriff's office on the
armed robbery charge and will
recclvo from fivo years to life
In the penitentiary If convicted.
His slater will be prosecuted

OBITUARY
CHARLES A. KNUD80N
Charles A. Knudson, rest'
dent of Phoenix, passed away at
a local hospital Friday. Mr.
Knudson was born at Sloan
Iowa, July 1, 1868.
As a young man, he moved to
South Dakota, and on June 4
1SU5, we J united in marriage to
Frances J. Eddy. In 1912 the
family moved to Saskatchewan
Canada, where they lived until
1D27, when they came to South
ern Oregon.
He was a member ct the
Masonic Lodge, a life member
o,f Naja Temple of the Shrine of
Diadwood, S. V., and Past
Master of Philip, S. D. Lodge
A. F. & A. M.
Besides his wife he leaves
one daughter, Miss Evaline
Knudson, Washington, D. C
one step daughter, Mrs. L e d a
Nordquist of Mcdford; one step
son, Clayton Eddy of Kceline,
Wyo., 11 grandchildren and 8
great-grandchildren; one sister,
Anna of Iowa; two brothers.
Lewis of South Dakota and
George of Idaho.

Nominations for four Jackson
county offices will be made in
May primary. They arc:
Circuit Judge for Jackson
and Josephine counties, Judge
Herbert "K. Hanna, incumbent;
county Judge, J. B. (Blin) Cole-,
man, incumbent; county com
missioner, William Perry, Eagle
Point, Incumbent; and sheriff,
Howard Gault, incumbent, ap
pointed to fill out the term of
the late Syd I. Brown.
Though no formal announce
ment has been made, all incum
bents are expected to seek re
nomination. Coleman, Perry,
and Gault are republicans.
RIOT IN SEOUL
Seoul. Korea, Jan. 19 (U.R)
Two persons were killed, several

Gold Hill, Jan. 19 Construc
tion of a motel and a machine
shop on adjoining properties
along the Pacific highway Just
north of here will start Monday.
E. L. Browning is erecting six
frame overnight motel units and
A. L. and B. L. Norris, brothers,
will build the SO by 25 foot shop.
Browning's motel units will be
12 by 18 feet and will have
adjoining garages. He hopes to
complete them in about two
months and then begin construc
tion of eight housekeeping units
which will have two rooms and
bath and will measure 16 by 20
feet. Browning, who came here
last September from Oakland,
Calif., where he had two variety
stores, thinks his project will re
quire six months to complete.
Eventual plan of Browning Is
establishment of an amusement
park somewhere between Mcd
ford and Grants Pass. A swim
ming pool and roller rink would
be the main attractions.
The Norris brothers' expect to
complete their shop in about one
month. They will do general re
pairing and welding and hope to
get work on heavy duty equip
ment. Their shop will have a 14
by 14 foot service station porch.
The men have previously done
logging work.
Leveling of the ground for the
two projects was recently com
pleted. .

PRESBYTERIAN GROUP
William Perl will be president
of the junior high school depart
ment of the Presbyterian church
as a result of a recent election
held by that group. Ted Bird
scy was chosen to serve as vice
president, Maxine Falwell is sec
retary and Jim Grey was elected
publicity chairman.
Plans are being made for a
busy season of activity for the
Junior high department under
the new officers who have al
ready assumed their duties.

15 will release short line cars
where the run is greater than
351 miles. On March 1 the order
will release short line cars
where the run is 231 milc3 or
more. On March 15th it will re
lease all short line cars.
Under this order the Southern
Pacific will establish over night
sleeping car service between
southern Oregon and San Fran
cisco where the distance is 442
miles effective February 15. Ef
fective March 1 Southern Pacific
will' restore sleeping car service
between Portland and southern
Oregon points. The distance Port
land to Ashland is 342 miles. Ef
fective March 15 the Southern
Pacific will restore the overnight
sleeping car service between
Portland and Coos Bay where
the distance is 245 miles.
Under the same order, effec
tive on February 15 the over
night sleeping car service be
tween Sacramento and Los An
geles, between Los Angeles and
Phoenix where the distances are
in excess of 351 miles will be
restored. On March 1 the over
night service between San Ra
fael and Eureka, Calif., will be

Funeral services will be held

Griffiths,, 54, wife of David
Griffiths, 218 West Jackson
street, with the Rev. Louis Kir
by officiating. Final rites will
be held in Siskiyou Memorial
park. Mrs. Griffiths passed
away Friday in a local hospital.
She came to Medford from
Ritzville, Wash., 36 years ago
and after being employed for
twj years by the telephone com
pany, she was a bookkeeper for
the Mail Tribune for 16 years.
She was born at Pittsburgh,
Kan., Sept. 17, 1891, and was
married here in October, 1928,
to Mr. Griffiths who survives.
There are also left, two children,
David and Ruth Griffiths at
home. Also two brothers, Wal
ter Hess of Hood River, Ore.,
and Arthur Hess, Medford. Also
two aunts, Mrs. Ida Watkins and
Mrs. Anna McCollom, both of
Medford.
