Rooks Loom As Tough Foe
For High School Quintet
Fresh from their 38 to 22 con
quest of Klamath Falls In a
Southern Oregon league game,
Medford high's basketball quin
tet takes to the floor Saturday
night against the strong Oregon
State College Rooks on the Med
ford court. It will be the first ap
pearance for the Rooks in South
ern Oregon since start of the
war.
The visitors are coached by
Frank Mandic, former all-northern
division forward at Oregon
State, who was recently honor
ably discharged from the navy
where he served as a lieutenant.
The Rooks opened their schedule
Wednesday night against the
strong McMinnville high school
team and will be meeting Med
ford in their second test of the
season.
Coach Al Simpson said the
Tornado five is expected to be
at top strength for the game,
which looms as the toughest on
the local schedule to date. Jerry
Ross is expected to be back in
the lineup although Bill Singler
might get the call because of his
20-point scoring spree against
Klamath Falls.
Medford and Grants Pass jun
ior varsity crews renew their
feud which started a week ago
with Medford stealing a 48 to 46
win in the second overtime peri
od. If anything like their last
encounter, the main game will
have to be a donnybrook to keep
the spotlight. The preliminaiy
is slated to start about 7:30 p.m.
with the Rooks-Tornado clash
set for 8:30.

Bleacher Seats At
Hialeah Track Are
Destroyed By Fire
Miami, Fla., Jan. 18 U.F9
Racing was expected to go on as
scheduled today at the Hialeah
track despite a fire which de
stroyed 600 bleacher seats and
provided a stirring climax to the
biggest day in Florida turf his
tory. Origin of the fire which broke
out shortly after the fans de
parted from yesterday's opening
day program, had not been de
termined. That it would at least
temporarily reduce crowds was
likely.
The fire was brought under
control by trainers, jockeys and
hostlers who acted as volunteer
firemen, working against a stiff
south breeze which threatened
for a time to spread the flames
through the entire plant.
Fire departments from Miami
joined in fighting the blaze and
it was out about an hour after it
was discovered.
