Construction Underway At Yankee
Stadium for Louis - Conn Title Go
New York, Jan. 17 (U.PJ
Construction of facilities for
packing up to 113,000 fans into
Yankee stadium began today in
Promoter Mike Jacobs' lumber
mill, less than 24 hours after he
announced that Joe Louis and
Billy Conn would battle for the
heavyweight title at the ball
park next June 19.
No Time Lost
Lumberman Jacobs lost no
time in getting crews of work
men Into action building port
able ramps which will be used
not only at Yankee stadium, but
at the Polo Grounds for three
outdoor title fights there and at
Los Angeles. Plans are in the
making to stage an outdoor
championship bout there next
winter, probably at tne nuge
Olympia stadium where the 1932
Olympic games were held.
Promoter Jacobs said he had
announced the site of the Conn
Louis return bout sooner than
expected in order to allow all
possible time for completion of
arrangements and so that out of
town fans could make plans to
attend.
65.000 Folding Seats
"Uncle Mike" said he had 65,
000 folding seats in a warehouse
in New Jersey and that he would
try to get as many of them into
Yankee stadium as possible for
the fight. He estimated that about
40,000 portable seats could be
used In addition to the 73.000
grandstand and bleacher seats.
The ramps will be stored be
tween fights and can be shipped
to any major city in the country
Jacobs said, indicating that he
planned to put on outdoor shows
in other sections and that exist
ing facilities in most of them
would not be sufficient to house
the crowds he expected.

WORD BATTLE OF
PRO GRID LOOPS
IS TAKING SHAPE
New York, Jan. 17 (U.R)
National league football offic
ials returned home from their,
week .. long conference today
while a word battle threatened
between their new commission
er, Bert Bell, and the commis
sioner of the rival all-American
circuit, Jim Crowley.
Crowley started it by saying
that Bell, who was named com
missioner of the National
league last Friday, had ap
proached him only a month
ago regarding establishment of
an all-America franchise in
Philadelphia. Bell, owner of the
Pittsburgh Steelers, and former
owner and coach of the Phila
delphia Eagles, reportedly had
a 10-year option on Philadel
phia's Shibe Park as a playing
site.
Bell, reached by the United
Press at Philadelphia, said he
had discussed the matter with
Crowley there, but not at Bell's
invitation.
Bell did not indicate that he
would be connected with the
projected Philadelphia all
America club himself. He said
Crowley told him that Gene
Mori, head of the garden state
race track in Camden, N. J.,
would be in to see him later.
When Mori came, five days
later, Bell said he told him then
that "in the best interests of
professional football, as long
as there is a National league
team in Philadelphia, we can
not let the all-America Into
Shibe Park."
