DEGENERATION IS
Little Lesson No. 2, the book
let titled CVD, however instruc
tive or practical it may be, re
mains one of
'iie less popu
lar booklets
In the series.
Why can that
be? Is it be
cause readers
do not know
what it is
about? I ha-e
explain e d a
good many
times that
run ......
cr- rardio".a,cu:
lar degeneration deterioration,
decline, wearing out, failure in
function of the heart and arter
ies but few readers under
stand this. Most of them, I am
afraid, feel a little embarrassed
by the suggestion that they
have become or are becoming
degenerate, for Jn their minds
that implies moral depravity.
Well, I'm stuck with it now
it is too late to retrace my
steps and try to persuade all
present readers that when a
doctor uses the term degenera
tion he means simply a retro
gressive change in cells and tis
tues and nothing else.
We may as well cheer tip and
take it as gracefully as possible,
for, as a matter of fact, each
and every one of us who reach
es full maturity, growth, devel
opment is bound to degenerate
from the very moment of peak
of perfection just as every
living thing does, plant or
animal.
Some medical authorities
speak of "reversing the process
of degeneration" to1 bring about
regeneration or rejuvenation. I
don't know whether we can do
that in any circumstance, but
I am certain we can arrest the
degeneration process or at least
retard it. Degeneration is of
course slow deaih ihat is, we
begin to die the moment we
have attained complete develop
ment. If by avoiding funda
mental nutritional deficiencies,
defects of growth and faults of
development we can reach ma
turity in A-l physical condition,
then we are much more likely
to enjoy long life, or as Dr. E.
V. McCollum expressed It. "ex
tension of the prime of life in
both directions".
As it seems to me, decay and
loss of teeth, pyorrhea, rheuma
tism, arteriosclerosis and pre
mature old age are just differ
ent manifestations of degenera
tion, and degeneration depends
mainly upon the individual's
nutrition not just while he or
she is following a diet or taking
treatment but throughout In
fancy, childhood, youth and
adulthood.

Answer Several pages about boils
in "Save Your Skin" booklet recom
mended to C. W. McL. above. Per
haps your husband s occupation is a
factor machine, workers often suf
