San Francisco, Jan. 15 (UP.)
More than 2,000 Italian prison
ers of war boarded ships in San
Francisco bay today and settled
down for a long-awaited trip
home.
They wore the first of 15,300
Italian and German prisoners
that will embark here for Eu
ropean ports during the next few
weeks.
The SS Adabell Lykes had
1250 "co-operative" Italians
aboard, while the SS Alcoa
Patriot served as temporary
home for another 927 "non-co
operative" Italians. The two
ships will go to Naples.
Paralysis Victim
College Sophomore,
Is Proud Of Shave
Baton Rouge, La. U.R)
Ray Lucas of Thibodaux, La.,
cant go anywhere without his
wheel chair, but nevertheless
he's a full-fledged freshman at
Louisiana State University.
He's even got a shaved head
to prove it.
Ray is an infantile paralysis
victim, but he graduated from
high school and wanted to go
to college. He talked it over with
Col. E. Y. Argo, civilian com
mandant at LSU, and they de
cided it could be done.
Argo worked out Ray's sched
ule so that he'd have time to
make the trip from building to
building between classes. -Then
he went over the route with a
university carpenter, and had
special wooden ramps built so
that Ray could roll his wheel
chair anywhere he might have
had to use stairs.
It wasn't hard to get Ray a
suitable roommate on the cam
pus, because Ed McCulla, his
lifelong friend from Thibodaux,
insisted that he be the man.
Everything was set until the
sophomores started shaving the
hair of all freshmen in line with
LSU tradition.
They ignored Ray. He patient
ly explained to the sophs that
he was a freshman, but still they
were dubious about shearing his
locks.
So Ray went back to Argo
for more help. "Make the soph
omores shave my head," he ask
ed. Argo grinned and passed the
word along.
So now Ray wheels his chair
to class every day, with a purple
and gold freshman cap shielding
his bald pate from the southern
sun.
