NAVY SIGNS SEVEN
FROM THIS AREA

Seven men In Medford and
vicinity have enlisted in the
navy recently according to J, F.
Acosta, CEM, in charge of the
navy recruiting station in this
area. Enlistees are Junior Her
bert Davison, son of E. J. Davi
son of Grants Pass; Harry Ron
old Johnson, son pf Harry John
son. Grants Pass: Robert Edwin
Robinson, son of Edwin F. Rob
inson. Medford: Jim LaVerne

The income of enlisted per
sonnel in the navy is the great
est of any branch of the service
according to Acosta, who as
serts that proof of this is found
in a study of organization
charts. More than half of the
navy enlisted men are petty of
ficers, he oolnted out, wnne a
large percentage aboard ship
are seamen first class or fire
men first class. The latter two
nav arades received $66 a
month, which compares to the
pay of a corporal.
Navy pay begins at $50 a
month, Acosta said, with top of
$138 a month plus many extras,
including five percent addition
al for every three years of service.

Paul Dlumenstein is home,

cycle. He suffered a couple of
accidents en route which put
him in the hospital and delayed
his trip somewhat.
Kenneth Roberts visited
friends here last week. He is a
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Geo.
Hayes, who went to California
some months ago. Mr. Roberts
reports that his grandfather is
ill with heart trouble. I

Extension unit will conduct a
rummage and white elephant

be sold as well as miscellaneous
articles, such as books, novel
ties, etc.
Bob Burns has received an
honorable discharge from the
navy, and is visiting at the home
of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Burns. ;
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Stewart
and family have moved back
into their home on Beall Lone.
The Frank Meadows family,
who hava been renting this place
for the past three years, are
moving to the home which they
have recently purchased, the
former Wilkes place, on Beall
Lane. '
Golden Link Bible class of the
Church of Christ, will hold its
regular monthly party at the
home of Mrs. Henry Mtfnnln.
Those desiring transportation
are requested to meet at the
Wilson comer before 2 o'clock.
Mrs. C. C. Whitney has gone
to California for a few days
visit.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hover and
family returned last week from
visit In Portland and other
northern cities. Mrs. Hover has
been ill with the flu since their
return.
, Mrs. Joa Wright is still in the
hospital recuperating from a
stroke.

Missionary Land is
To Speak Sunday at
Eagle Pt. Church
Eagle Point, Jan. 10 The
Rev. R. M. Landis, who spent
12 years in the Philippine Is
lands as a missionary, will
speak at the Eagle Point Com
munity church at 2:30 p. m.
Jan. 13.
After the fall of the Philip
pine Islands to the Japanese the
Rev. Landis, with many other
missionaries, spent a year in the
Interior hiding out, living on
roots, insects and anything
available in the Jungles. They
were later captured by a Jap
squadron and spent 23 months
in concentration camps, being
rescued by American para
troopers and amphibious forces
in the closing days of the war.

Edgar L. Warren, director of
the U. S. conciliation service,
said today that union member

persons In 1830 to between
14,000,000 and 14,500,000 in
1945.
'We can make reasonable
guess that the terms and condi
tions of employment of approxi
mately 47 per cent of the work
ing population (excluding agri
culture, domestic service, gov
ernment and self-employed) are
determined by about 30,000
collectively bargained union
contracts," he told the Chicago
association of commerce.
BIO BONFIRE
San Francisco, Jan. 10 (U.R)
Starting San Francisco's biggest
bonfire, state fire marshal's
agents today set fire to the old
warehouse on fission Rock off
the waterfront. The warehouse
pilings, 23 feet high and cover
ing a total area of approximately
250 square feet, will burn for 36
hours, firemen said.
