tableaus, songs, etc., was pre
sented by the new lecturer,
Ethel Carr.
Committees for the ensuing
year were appointed. Much ac
tivity is planned for the winter
months and it is the wish of all
the officers and committee chair
men that all grangers plan to
attend the meetinES on the sec
ond and fourth Tuesdays and
help make this one of the big
gest and best years for Phoenix
Grange.
The master Is especially anx
ious that all members who can
attend the state conference at
Central Point Grange Hall at
8 p. m. Thursday. A prize Is to
be awarded to the Grange with
25 per cent of their officers pres
ent. Grangers going are asked
to fill their cars with those who
have no transportation. Phoenix
Grange officers will demonstrate

out" or some
such absurdity.

er cathartic or
pure ative of
Dr. Brady "vegetable" in
gredients or perhaps some con
coction of "herbs", such as enl
cidem esroh spelled backwards.
Aside from the wear and tear
on the delicate mucous mem
brane lining the stomach and In
testine, laxative or purgative
doses of any of the saline cathar
tics (Epsom salts or magnesium
sulfate, Rochelle salts or potassium-sodium
tartrate, phosphate
of soda, sodium sulfate, or mix
ture of these as in various miner
al waters) irritate stomach and
small intestine, tend to prevent
assimilation of essential mineral
elements and other nutrients
from the food, and when not
freely evacuated from the bowel
are absorbed and must be ex
creted through the kidnevs
which is rough on the kidneys.
When you sum it all up it is
difficult to understand why In
Sam Hill people dose themselves
with salts anyway
One reason j
which seems to appeal to thej
mind of the ignorant person is
that the Catharsis produced by
salts "lowers high blood pres
sure." It does not have any such
effect. If one with, say, chronic
nephritis (Bright's disease) or
arteriosclerosis (hardening of ar
teries) in these and other
chronic disease high blood pres
sure is nearly always present
if such a person were to take
enough salts to reduce the blood
pressure to the level of that of
a healthy person of his or her
age, it would probably spell any
thing but prolongation of life
for the victim. The increased
blood pressure in most instances
is a compensatory, incidental
and desirable adjustment, essen
tial to maintain fairly good cir
culation or supply of blood de
spite the handicap of the neph
ritis, the arteriosclerosis or what
ever ails the patient. Whatever
it may be, it is not just high
blood pressure, and notwith
standing the claims of quacks
and healers, nostrum vendors
and freak diet "specialists" there i
is no particular remedy, diet, I
treatment which will correct or
cure high blood pressure regard-j
less of the heart and artery con
dition or whatever the trouble
that accounts for the high blood
pressure in the particular casei
The priclple objection to fre
quent use of saline laxatives,
either in the form of purified
salts or as natural purgative
.waters is, as it seems to me, that
these sails interfere with assim
ilation and utilization of calcium
and this is particularly import
ant in childhood and youth
when any calcium shortage im
pairs growth and developments
and ii adult age when calcium
shortage makes teeth more sub
ject to caries (cavities), and in
