ATTENDANCE UP
AFTER HOLIDAYS
Attendance at Medford city
school! yesterday was consider
ably better than In the closing
day- before the Christmas holi
days it was reported from the
office of the school superintend
ent, E. H. Hedrick. Absences the
last day before closing in some
instances ran nearly one-fourth
of the school enrollments due to
influenza and other illnesses.
Only senior high school at
tendance had dropped. Yester
day senior high school reported
104 absent pupils, not including
members of the football squad
not yet back from San Francisco
where they attended the annual
East-West game, as compared to
91) the last day before vacation.
Junior high school had 79 pu
pils as compared to 160 the last
day before vacation.
Jackson school had but 49 ab
sent pupils yesterday, compared
to 160 the closing day, while
Lincoln school absences totaled
57, same as the last day before
vacation. Roosevelt also had 57
absences, as compared to 70 be
fore vacation, while Washington
reported 63, compared to 140.
Absences in all schools totaled
409 yesterday as against 680 the
final day before vacation.

Ashland Tidings

ment of the appointment of
Doyle D. Secly, Portland, as city
editor of the Daily Tidings was
made today by G. M. Grt-cn,
editor-manager.
Prior to the war Scely was as
sociated with the Enterprise at
Oregon City. Recently released
after serving with the army air
corps in the Pacific area, he
spent several months with the
National Broadcasting company
In Hollywood before coming to
Ashland. Secly Is a graduate of
the high school at West Linn,
Ore., and has attended the Uni
versity of Hawaii at Honolulu
and the University of California
at Los Angeles.
William A. York
Rites Are Held
Ashland, Jan. 3 Funeral ser
vices for William A. York, 88,
who passed away Dec. 28 In a
Medford hospital, were held yes
terday at 1:30 p.m. at the Lit
wilier Funeral chapel. The Rev.
G. A. Thompson, Medford, offic
iated. Interment was made In the
Mountain View cemetery.

Samuel Rector, 60
Ashland, Jan. 3 Funeral ser
vices for Samuel Willis Rector,
aged 60, were held today at
1:30 p. m. at the Lltwlller Fun
eral chapel and interment was
made in Mountain View cem
etery. Mr. Rector passed away Dec.
30 in Medford.

duties, of president of the Med
ford Kiwanis club at the meet
ing held yesterday at the Hol
land Hotel. He succeeds J. E.
Earley. Ed Niles has replaced
Glen Fabrick as vice-president
and Paul McDuffce was re
elected secretary and treasurer.
New directors are Eugene Fer
rell, Paul Sclby, Don Newbury,
Don Faber and Bill Peck while
Tony Manno and Jlmmie Bolton
were re-elected to the board. C.
Lyall Fldler was named program
chairman for the year and Ron
ald Rice will provide programs
for the month of January.
One-year perfect attendance
pins were presented to Perl, Fld
ler, Lynn Cram, and Bob Church
and two-year pins were award
ed to Seth Bullis, Orris Craw
ford, Earley, Fabrick, Ed. Felds
man, Frank Humphrey and
E. E. Kofopd.
Carey Thompson gave an Im
promptu talk on fishing and
later explained the clothing
drive which will be conducted in
Medford during January.

Dodges Dragnet
Grants Pass, Jan. 3 Law en
forcement officers of two stales
were today on the lookout for
the man who last Monday morn
ing held up and robbed Tracy's
Steak House of $337 at the point
of a gun.
A dragnet applied locally by
city, county and state officers
was closed without avail after
many hours 01 search. Sgt. C. R.
Borgman of the state police said
that the man's description has
been wired to points north and
south of Grants Pass.
The description given officers
was of a man wearing a brown
overcoat, who appeared to be
about five feet, ten inches tall.
weighed about 170 pounds, and
was about 35 years of age.

LOGGING OPERATIONS
HAMPERED BY WINTER
Logging operations In Jackson
county are now on a slow bell
due to wintry weather and soggy
condition of many roads due to
recent rains. State weighers re
port a drop In truck hauling
which Is reflected in a drop in
Justice court citations, the past
month for overloads and other
violations.
In the Prospect-Union Creek
sections logging operations are
now about half of normal.
ACTOR ROBBED
Hollywood, Jan. 3 (U.R)
Actor Dana Andrews reported
today that $3,000 worth of
Jewelry and clothing were
stolen from his car, parked out
side a Pasadena cafe. Andrews
said he missed n silver fox cape
valued at $1,000, Jewelry worth
$750 and more than $1,000 worth
of other clothing.

AERIAL FREIGHT
TO START FEB. 1

United Air Lines will enter the
air freight field Feb. 1 with the
lowest charges ever proposed by
an airline, the company an
nounced today.
United will fly freight to the
Pacific coast for about a third
of the cost of present-day air ex
press, according to Charles P.
Graddick, director of air cargo.
Typical of the tariffs filed with
the civil aeronautics board is
one of 27 cents a pound on ship
ments of 3,000 pounds and over
from New York to the Pacific
coast.
Charges are graduated accord
ing to volume and distance, giv
ing the lowest possible rates to
volume shippers for long hauls,
Graddick said.
Air freight from New York to
the Pacific coast will cost $33.63
for 100-pound shipments, and
$26.90 per 100 pounds for ship-1
ments of 3000 pounds or more, j
compared with $73.68 for 100:
pounds by air express.

Several pine mills in the Klam
ath basin area resumed opera
tion today following ratification
of a 15-cent-an-hour pay boost
by some locals in opposition to
the notthwest strike policy com
mittee's stand against the agree-1
mcnt.
Base pay of the workers was
raised from 87'3 cents to
$1.02V4. The AFL strike policy
committee objected, saying the
agreement provided that wage
issues between the men rnd
operators be closed for a year
unless the OPA grants a raise in
lumber prices in excess of the
cost of pay Increases.
Meanwhile, the committee
continued its meeting In Sdc
karte, Wash., with the announced
intention of obtaining a uniform
$1.05 an hour in the pine belt,
thus equalizing fir and pine base
pays.
