RADIO STATION
IS PLANNED BY
Ashlnnd, Jan. 2 Ashland will
have a modern radio broadcast
ing station in 1946, if plans be
ing worked out by a local group
materialize as expected, accord
ing to the announcement by G.
M. Green and associates who
have already made a prelimi
nary application for a permit to
construct such a radio station.
The Siskiyou Broadcasting
company has been formed, with
a capital stock of $40,000 prac
tically all of which has been sub
scribed. Business men associat
ed with Mr. Green in the corpor
ation are: H. R. Morris, Elmer
C. Biegcl, and Attorney Wm.
Briggs. Others will be Included
in the corporation and operating
company as the plans advance.
It is possible that The TMly Tid
ings will also be associated In
the corporation, although no def
inite plans have been made In
this way.
It will be sometime before
definite plans can be announced,
since the establishment of a ra
dio requires a long period of
application, preparation and con
struction before it can be put
into operation, although a pre
liminary application has already
been made to the Federal Com
munications Commission, which
controls the issuance of radio
broadcasting permits.
It is planned that the station
will be of the new high frcquen
known as KM, which, it is stated,
will predominate the radio field
in the future.
Sites for the broadcasting sta
tion and studios have been pro
cured and overall plans have
progressed satisfactorily, It was
stuled today, which the business
men hope will result in the op
eration of the station at the
earliest possible date.

0. S. POPULATION
GROWING FAST;
Census Bureau Estimates
145 Million by 1950; Birth
Rate to Jump In 1946.
Washington, Jan. 2 (U.R)
The nation's population Is grow
ing faster than anticipated.
Right now, It's a little better
than 140,000,000 . By 1950, the
Census Bureau estimated today,
it probably w'ill be close to 145,
000.000. Big jump In the birth rate Is
expected In 1946. This, said a
Census Bureau official, is "a
natural biological consequence
of long absence." He was re
ferring to the fact that a lot of
married soldiers have returned
home after months or years
abroad. In addition, a lot of sol
diers have gotten married since
the end of the war.
Estimate Exceeded
The Census Bureau had fig
ured that in 1945 the population
would reach 139,8:12,000. In
stead, It passed the 140,000,000
mark in October. The estimate
for 1948 is 140,818,000, but the
chances are good it will be
above that. At any rale, the
Census Bureau points out that
its figures are just estimates.
Despite the war and absence
of a lot of men In service over
seas, the birth rate attained high
levels In 1942, 1943 and 1944.
In each of those years, nearly
3,000,000 births were recorded.
Deaths ran around 1,500,000 for
each of those years. This didn't
include the number lost in the
war, however.
On the basis of present estl-,
mates, a slight drop in births
will be recorded for 1943. Final
total is expected to be about 2,-
750.000 births, compared with
1,300,000 deaths.
The last official census was
taken In 1940. It showed that
there were 132,121,000 persons
In the United States. The popula
tion has grown by approximate
ly 8,000,000 since then. In the
next five years, the Increase Is
expected to be only about 5,000,
000. Increase Dwindles
Every U. S. census has shown
a population Increase, but the
rate of Increase has been slack
ening for the past century. Be
cause of the war-time increase
in the birth rate, the population
growth probably will be greater
in the present decade than In
the previous one, but the Census
Bureau does not expect this
trend to continue after 1950.
The Census Bureau finds that
the nation's lnbor force has been
growing at a more rapid rate
than the population. A major
reason for this, it was explained,
Is the gradual "aging" of the
population. The proportion of
the total population in the adult
ages is steadily increasing.
In 1940, 53,2911,000 persons
were In the available labor force.
This constituted 52.7 per cent of
the population of those 14 years
old or over. In 1050, It is ex
pected to be 59,1(15,000, or 53.9
per cent of all those 14 years old
or over.

Stanley declared the raising of
