C. A. Myers, Assessor of Jackson County
I
Washington, Jan. 2 (U.R)
Sen. Wayne Morse, R., Ore.,
charged today that the army and
navy and "the administration"
are trying to sidetrack his reso
lution for a congressional inves
tigation of court martial sen
tences in the service.
Morse said that more than two
weeks ago he had asked the
army and navy for a list of 50
ot the severest court martial
sentences handed down by each,
but had received no reply. He
said lack of action on his resolu
tion for a general inquiry indi
cated senate democrats were try
ing to block the move.
Under the Morse resolution
the Investigation would be con
ducted by a special committee
composed of three members of
the military affairs committee,
three from the naval affairs com
mittee and three from the ju
diciary committee.
Don't Want It
"But the army and navy don't
want an investigation because
they know it would show shock
ing injustices," Morse said. "It
would disclose the tyrannical na
ture of the courts and the arbi
trary procedures followed by
them. Sen. William F. Know
land, R., Calif., and I have just
checked up and found that the
courts martial still are passing
out wartime penalties for acts
committed In peacetime.
"Boys are receiving sentences
of many years for acts which
would be considered only misde
meanors in civilian courts."

TRAFFIC DEATHS
WILL TAKE JUMP
IN COMING YEAR
Greatest Increase in Nation's
History Seen Unless
Safety Effort Is Made.
Washington, Jan. 2 OJR)
The New Year will bring the
greatest increase in traffic
deaths in history unless a thor
ough nationwide safety effort is
made, the American Automobile
Association warned today.
"Every possible factor Is com
bining to bring about an unpre
cedented rate of increase in
street and highway deaths,"
H. J. Brunnier, president of the
AAA, said in his forecast for
1946.
Mileage Grows
"With the removal of gasoline
and tire rationing restrictions,
motor vehicle mileage has in
creased by leaps and bounds,
with resultant Increased acci
dent exposure," he added.
Brunnier said there were
three main factors contributing
to the rising death toll:
1. Many cars are far past nor
mal service life and badly In
need of repairs.
2. Millions of people have
done little driving during war
years and must learn to drive
again.
3. Pedestrians are accustomed
to crossing streets on which
there was very little traffic.
Caution Lacking
"And a less obvious, but no
less important factor." he con
tinued "Is the over-all postwar
psychology a tendency to react
too strongly to the removal of
abnormal strains, restrictions or
dangers by casting all caution
aside."
Brunnier said that the dim
ming prospect of all-out motor
car production and scarcity of
tires means that car and tire
conservation must be continued,
both to keep the passenger car
fleet Intact and to prevent an
"even worse Increase" in the
accident totals.
He said President Truman's
call for a nationwide traffic
safety conference "a much-needed
step In a time of real peril,"
and urged Its support by all or
ganizations and Individuals
working for public safety."

Akron, O. (U.R) "Their
war service taught them the
value of a high school educa

of curriculum Instruction for
public schools here.
Akron had 60 ex-servicemen
enter high school at the begin

where they left off when they
entered the armed forces. The
students, ranging in ages from
the late teens to the early SOs,
were accepted by other students
with little excitement adult
students aren't rare in the city's
schools.
Former GIs like these, fresh
from the foxholes and the decks
of American ships, now do bet

before they left for service,
Dillehay said.
He addad that they went back
to textbooks on their own ac
cord and few have dropped out.
