DERWEAR
the quaint old granny notion
that children whose legs or
knees are exposed in the winter
will probably nave rneumatiz
some day if not now.
I was sternly reproved by a
well meaning reader recently
because an infant in the reader's
neighborhood had been regular
ly put to bed in a room with
wide open windows and the ba
by had very light or no cover:
the parents asserted that it was
by my advice.
Those parents may have been
sincere in thinking so, but they
were wrong. I have seldom fail
ed to specify that enough cloth
ing, bed covers, artificial
warmth to keep one comfortable
is always necessary. A young
infant cannot tell you whether
he Is warm enough, perhaps, but
if you are not an irresponsible
dimwit you can determine that
by simply feeling of the baby's
hands and feet. If they are not
warm the baby is not dressed
warmly enough or the bed lacks
sufficient cover or a foot-warm-
cr should be placed in the bed
or the bed should be screened
against cold wind.
As for the hypothetical or
Imagined relation between "in
sufficient clothing" or "expo
sure and "rheumatism " or
rheumatic fever (acute Infection
arthritis), there is no evidence to
support the notion that bare
knees or bare legs or as light
underwear or other clothing as
the child likes to wear contrlb
! ute in any way to the develop
j ment of any so-called rheumatic
' ailment. That notion is becom
ing extinct.
