SOCIAL SECURITY
Survivors' benefits are pay
able no matter what age death
occurs, according to a statement
today by Howard J. Nelson,
manager of the Klamath Falls
field office of the Social Secur
ity board.
It was explained by Mr. Nel
son that the wife and child of

at the time of his death.
If the worker leaves no one
immediately eligible for month
ly benefits a lump-sum death
benefit is payable if a claim Is
filed within two years. The
lump-sum can go to the widow,
widower, child, grandchild or
parent, In the order named.
Other relatives or friends may
be paid reimbursement for bur
ial expenses if the worker Is
not survived by any such rela
tive. Nelson stated.

Undersea Navies
Seen Necessity
In Atomic War
Washington, Dec. 27 U,R)
Sen. Edwin C. Johnson, D.,
Colo., looked into the atomic
future today and saw entire
navies moving under the sens.
The senator, a member of the
senate's atomic energy commit
tee, said every surface ship In
the navy had become "obsolete"
with the advenfr of the bomb.
The army and navy are now
planning to test the bomb
against naval vessels.
Johnson pictured the men-O'
war of the foreseeable future as
uranium - powered submarines,
equipped with "jet-propelled
atom-bomb rockets.
One such submarine alone, h
said, "could jink a whole navy."
Not only warships but tankers
and troop carriers would have
to move beneath the sea In an
other war, according to Johnson
"The navy has got to go un
derwater," he said. "Surface
ships just don't stand a chance
against the atom bomb."

EXTRA LUMBER TO
PERMIT MILL TO
IRK ALL
Central Point, Dee. 27
Recent arrangement with small
Willamette and Umpqua valley i
establishments in re-mlll thniri
lumber will probably enable the
Southern Oregon Planing Mill
company here to continue opera
tion all winter with a mill and
office crew of about 25 persons,
according to Harry Dowson,
manager.
The lumber will supplement
a supply from saw mills In this
vicinity.
Strike-bound since last Sep
tember, the company resumed
work on a two shift basis De
cember 10 following a mutually
satisfactory agreement with the
union. The. planing mill Is
operating 16 hours daily and
surfacing 140.000 to 150,000
feet. Dally shipments range
from four to five carloads, Dow
son says. Planed mainly is two,
three and four inch Douglas fir.
Winter curtailment of logging
operations will prevent until
spring the running of the firm's
saw mill Just east of Central
Point. Its reopening will Increase
the number of company em
ployees to approximately 40.
Destroyed, by fire last April
2, the planing mill was rebuilt
and running again by June 1. It
specializes In remanufacturing
lumber of small mills which
have no planing facilities of their
own and the services consist of
grading, surfacing and re-sawing
of lumber for shipment and
final use.
Lumber from Willamette and
Umpqua valley mills is being
side-tracked and re-mllled here
while en route to the buyer. The
procedure prevents a tie-up and
time delay In those areas.
