to normal healing of an abso
lutely clean wound and certain
ly not advisable for routine ap
plication to minor wounds by
wiy of first aid treatment.
Provided the wound or rather
the member or the structure or
region involved gels absolute
rest, and provided there is no
reason to believe infection or in
oculation occurred from the un
clean or unsterilized instrument
or implement that made the
wound, healing will proceed
most satisfactorily if the wound
Is left undressed, uncovered, ex
posed freely to the air and day
light, if not to direct sunlight,
and allowed to remain dry or
else kept comfortably moist by
a trickle of sterile normal salt
solution (rounded teaspoonful
of table salt in the pint of boiled
water) for as many days or
weeks as may be required for
complete healing.
Of course such treatment pre
supposes protection against pos
sible access of flies or other in
sects, protection from cold at
night, and protection from care
less contact of the wound by
bedclothes, clothing, fingers or
any unsterilized objects.
In ordinary household first
aid practice such aseptic tech
nique is hardly practicable, even
if the layman happens to have
better than ordinary understand
ing of the principles of asepsis.
For the everyday wounds,
scratches, abrasions, cuts, a sin
gle Immediate application of
MILD TINCTURE OF IODINE
by pouring a few drops into
the wound, or by dropping a
drop or two on the wound from
the glass stopper or rod that
comes in the vial is generally
the t st treatment. Then cover
the wound with a coat of flexi
ble collodion or with a bit of
adhesive plaster or with a ster
ile gauze compress and band

(U.R) The Shell Oil Co. today
held up tests on the projected
world's deepest producing oil
well pending removal of 2,900
feet of pipe which broke off in
the hole. A previous test snow
ed only a 30-per cent crude oil
content, in the well, the 14,950
foot Alamitos 48-A. Oil is being
sought in the interval between
the 14,595 and 14,947-foot levels.
