ON GLASS EYE JAP
Yokohama, Dec. 19 (U.R)
Affidavits from eight American
soldieri formerly held in the
MiUushima prisoner of war
camp were Introduced today in
the war crimes trial of Talsuo
Tsuchiya, camp guard, known as
Little Glass Eye."
They told how "Little Glass
Eye" and other camp guards
beat and tortured American Ffc.
Robert Gordon Teas, of Streeter,
111., until Teas died. Teas was a
prisoner in the camp.
The affidavits, introduced on
the second day of the first war
crimes trial to be held in Japan
proper, said Teas, whom the Jap
anese guard accused of stealing
Red Cross food supplies, was
beaten with knotted ropes and
boards while he stood in the
snow with no clothes on in sub
freezing temperature.
They told how "Little Glass
Eye" and other guards known as
"Mushmouth," "Rivet Tooth,"
"Punk," and "Speedo" threw
cold water on Teas to revive
him for further beatings.

George VI waltzed with his
butler's wife last night, and
Queen Elizabeth did a turn with
her footman.
Princess Elizabeth, In a long
white evening gown with
spangled skirt, danced with a
chef from the palace kitchen.
It was the annual "below
stairs" Christmas party at Buck
ingham Palace. The royal fam
ily spent an hour with the
household staff doing gay danc
es. The king, in dinner jacket,
requested a Scottish eightsome
reel played by two khaki-clad
pipers of the Scots Guards.
Hattie McDaniel
Says Mate Lazy
Hollywood, Dec. 19 (U.R)
Actress Hattie McDaniel, Negro
academy award winner for her
character roles, won a divorce
today after testifying her hus
band. James L. Crawford
wouldn't work but he "ate good
meals."
The character actress said
Crawford, self-styled real estate
operator, thought that being
married to her meant he didn't
have to work.
Father Induction
Ordered Halted
Washington, Dec. 19 (U.R)
The induction of fathers was
ordered discontinued today by
national selective service head
quarters. Fathers with fewer
than three children will be per
mitted to volunteer, however.
MacARTHUR REITERATES
OCCUPATION PURPOSES
Tokyo, Dec. 19 (U.R) Gen.
Douglas MacArthur today issued
a re-statement of the basic pur
poses of the allied occupation
of Japan to his commanders and
pointed out that the form the
Japanese government will take

impose upon Japan any govern
ment that is not supported by
the freely-expressed will of the

Workers strike against General
Motors today, as three other
unions warned of impending
walkouts to enforce demands for
a 30 per cent wage boost.
UAW President Walter Reu
ther said the union considers the
president's panel "a fact-finding,
not a mediation board." He said
the UAW would make every ef
fort to give the board all the
facts.
The Western Electric Em
ployes association said 16,700
workers would strike 21 West
ern Electric plants in northern
New Jersey and New York Jan.

dustry. ECLIPSE VEILED
BY CLOUD DRIFT
Due to low, drifting clouds
and fog valley people were pre
vented from full observance of
the eclipse of the moon last
night. The lunar eclipse, pre
liminary phases of which began
at 3:38 p. m. in this area, was
total at about 6:39 according to
observors on the staff of the
local weather bureau. However,
drifting clouds abscured the
sight at about the same period,
it was reported.
Valley residents noted the
moon's dark shade of red which
is peculiar to the total eclipse
and which, coupled with the
drifting dark clouds, made the
sight quite spectacular.
CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
AT SCHOOL TONIGHT
Medford residents were re
minded today that the annual
all-school program of Christmas
music will be presented this
evening at the senior high school
auditorium at 8 p. m. Miss Mabel
Nansen. school music supervisor,
stated this noon that while many
pupils were absent from school
because of Illness, the program
would be presented as sched
uled.
The general public is invited
to attend.

RELIEF PROMISED
IN RETURNEE JAM
San Francisco, Dec. 19 (U.R)
More than 80,000 Pacific veter
ans, stranded in West Coast
ports by the "desperate Jam" of
railroad equipment, had renew
ed hope today of getting home
for Christmas in view of the
army and navy announcement
that enough rolling stock to
move 25,000 men daily would
begin to arrive tomorrow.
The equipment, requisitioned
from eastern railroads, was ex
pected to consist of 1,000
coaches. Forty per cent of the
cars were being sent to San
Francisco, 25 per cent to Los
Angeles and 35 per cent to the
Pacific northwest.
Arrival of the promised equip
ment was delayed because of se
vere weather cast of the Rocky
Mountains, the army and navy
said.
Army officials said It was
hoped that the east-bound de
partures would relieve conges
tion, which is expected to grow
worse in the next four days
when another 23,000 men are
scheduled to arrive in San Fran
cisco and 19 transports are due
at Los Angeles.
The city of Alameda, In Ala

G. I. BILL CHANGE
Washington, Dec. 19 (U.R)
The house and senate today com
pleted congressional action on
legislation designed to Improve
the No. 1 veterans law of this
war the G. I. Bill of Rights.
Both approved a measure,
agreed upon by house-senate con
ferees, designed to facilitate
loans to veterans and otherwise
improve administration of the
G. I. bill.
The bill approved by both
houses would:
1. Raise the maximum farm or
home loan that could be guar
anteed by the government under
the G. I. bill from $2,000 to
$4,000. The present limit on bus
iness loan guarantees remains
the same $2,000.
2. Eliminate a requirement
that the veterans administration
must approve G. I. loans before
they can be guaranteed. In farm
and home loans, however, the
bill provides that a government
appraiser must assure the vet
erans administration that Ihc
veterans is being charged a fair
price.
3. Raise the subsistence allow
ance of veterans going to school
under the G. I. educational pro
visions from $50 to $65 a month
for single men and from $75 to
$90 a month for ex-servicemen
with dependents.
4. Remove the 25-year age
limit on veterans who may go
to school under the G. I. bill.
5. Repeal a provision which
would compel the government
to deduct benefits paid out un
der the G. I. bill from any gen
eral bonus that may be voted
to veterans In the future.
DAIRY MAN INJURED
IN FALL OFF LADDER
Alfred L. Bailey, 122 East
13th street, received broken
ribs today when he fell from a
ladder while repairing a fan al
Campbell's Dairy, where he is
employed. According to Bailey'f
statement, he had placed a small
ladder atop some barrels to
reach the fan and fell on the
barrels when the ladder slipped.
He was taken to the Sacred
Herat hospital In the Conger
Morris ambulance.
JACKSONVILLE SCHOOLS
CLOSED BY INFLUENZA
Jacksonville, Dec. 19 Jack
sonville schools were closed to
day' because of the current In
fluenza epidemic and will reopen
Jan. 2, according to G. B. God
dard, school principal.
Approximately 110 or 40 per
cent of the 280 students of both
grade and high schools were ib
sent from classes yesterday, Mr.
Goddard said.
"Jenny Llnd" was the name
of a placer mining town in Cala
veras county in 1849.

The conferees agreed to the
senate figures on two major
items $750,000,000 for UN
RRA and $191,900,000 for vet
erans housing. The house- ap
proved bill included only $400,
000,000 for UNRRA and $24,
500,000 for veterans housing.
The conferees agreed on $10,
275,000 for the Columbia basin
project in Washington. The
house wanted $10,050,000; the
senate, $10,500,000.
