Pianist Presents
Opening Concert
For Association
(Mrs. E. E. Gors)
The Jackson County Civic
Music association Friday night
gave the first concert of the
1946-46 series at the senior high
school auditorium presenting E.
Robert Schmitz, pianist, in a
program that proved to be a
revelation of pianistic art. The
program was entirely represen
tative of piano literature from
Bach, 1685, to today's Gershwin.
Selecting three representative
numbers from his extensive Bach
repertoire, Mr. Schmitz played
with exactitude, quiet shaded
control and a scholarly observ
ance of pattern that resulted in
a most satisfactory and musical
rendition of this master's monu
mental work.
The great Chopin Sonata, In
four contrasting movements, was
played without pause and was
marked by deep musicianship in
interpretation, as well as by
amazing fluency, dexterity and
security of technique.
After a brief intermission the
music of the modernistic and im
pressionistic masters was the of
fering. As an interpreter of
Ravel and Debussy, stressing the
development of the modern
French school, Mr. Schmitz is
said to have no equal and the
audience was keenly and en
thusiastically responsive to the
perfection and beauty of the
music.
Besides being an international
ly known concert pianist, Mr.
Schmitz is outstanding in the
field of radio, chorale and or
chestra organization, has brought
out his own edition of many
master works and ha3 published
an exhaustive treatise elucidat
ing the many intricacies of piano
playing. He has been filling re
cent concert engagements in
Seattle and other cities of the
northwest and is returning to
San Francisco for further con
certs. The encores were "Prelude"
Debussy, "Golliwogg's Cake
Walk," Debussy, and "Waltz in
C-sharp Minor," Chopin.

A SUPERB COLLECTION
FOR CHRISTMAS GIVING
Breath-taking as sun on flying spray are
precious jewels and jewels alone can
hold that beauty in a permanent, wear
able form. No wonder that diamonds,
rubies, emeralds, sapphires and other
lovely gems have thrilled mankind for
thousands of years. Yet perhaps never
until today have jewels been seen at
their best, for only recently has the
cutting and mounting of gems been
brought to perfection. ' If you have not
recently studied fine jewelry, come in
now for a feast r . . see how functional
and charming modern jewelry has be
come. And, if you would give a woman
the most satisfying of all gifts, choose
a piece for her to make her heart beat
faster this Christmas morn!
