SEALS PRESIDENT
SEES BIG LEAGUE
STATUS BY 1949
Han Francisco, Dec. 14 (U.R)
Major league status for the Paci
fic coast baseball' circuit is
"certainty" within two or three
years, Charles H. Graham, presi
dent of the San Francisco Seals
said today. .
Rejection of the coast's 1945
major league bid was a "severe
setback but only temporary.
Graham declared, returning
from the majors convention in
the east.
Bit Premature
"Perhaps we were a bit pre
mature," he said, "but we will
make major status by 1949 sure
In 1948 we will achieve our
original objective we will not
accept the drafting of our play
ers. We will start 1949 as a
free, unhampered league, a big
league.
Graham said he thought a lack
of adequate ball parks hindered
the coast's try for the big-time
this year. The parks can be
brought up to mnjor league
standards by 1948, however, he
pointed out, and then "nothing
can stand in the way.
Reception Pleases
The Seals president was pleas
ed with the reception the major
leagues gave the coast's pro
posal, stating he expected the
Pacific Coast league to accept
the majors' offer of a joint com
mission to consider future plans.
The next PCL meeting will be at
San Diego next January
"The majors offered us their
fullest cooperation when, and if,
we can show them that we are
ready for major league status,"
Graham said.

Those with a fish appetite for
the week-end should best go to
the butcher shop, says Al Piche
about angling conditions in
streams hereabouts.
Steelhead fishing In the
Rogue river has dropped off
during the past week because
of low water and cold weath
er. A few fish have been
caught each day on skein eggs,
Piche says, with best results
obtained by boat fishing In
the river near Grants Pass.
Fish taken have been averag
ing about six pounds.
Largest fish entered in the
Grants Pass Steelhead Derby
lipped the scales to eight pounds,
Piche said he was told, with
many other large fish also being
entered.
Rogue river fishing closes
Jan. IS so winter fishermen will
have to hurry to get their fill
of the sport.
Steelhead angling in the Illi
nois river is not up to snuff, the
worm and hook specialist re
ports, but should improve with
the next rise In the water since
many fish are reported around
the mouth of the river.

Police believed the gun-battle
slayings of two detectives and a
gangland killing were solved to
day when a hoodlum "talked
and then led them to the body
of a pal he said was taken for
a ride when he got "too hot to
handle."
Chief of Detectives Walter
Storms, acting on a confession
by Lawrence Mczzanares, and a
squad of detectives dug up the
body of Cecil (Red) Smith In a
northside forest preserve where
Mczzanares said he had been
buried.
Mczzanares had been question
ed by police since he was seized
with three others in a roundup
of bookie-bandit suspects early
this month. Police found the
barrel of an automatic in Mez
zanares' garage and connected it
with bullets recovered from the
bodies of George Helstern and
Charles Brady, who were killed
in a gunbattle when they at
tempted to quiz a suspect.

Pete Belcastro's demands for
a now referee and the fact that
he had to give up a large per
centage of his purse to get the
match, all went for naught last
night when Rough Rufus Jones
defeated the Weed Assassin In
two straight falls In the main
vent of the Medford armory
wrestling matches.
It all came about when Bel-
eastro, behind one fall because
of head butts and a half crab
gained by Jones in the second
round, wouldn't relon.se a deadly
surfboard hold. Referee Norval
Stockstlll gave Belcastro every
chance but Pete, being certain
that Jones wouldn't come back,
held on too long and lost the
match on a foul.
"Blood and Guts" Davidson
gave the Gray Mask a thorough
going-over for the biggest part
of four rounds and was ahead
one fall to none when the Mask
dropped him over the ropes in
the last part of the fourth canto,
Injuring him so that he was
unable to continue.
1 Angelo Martlnelll came lip

round to lick Ben Sherman in
