type of anemia in young women
it was much more frequent
when I was driving my one
horse around the country roads
of Yates County than It is today)
or bromldrosis (bromoi, a
stench, hldros, weating.)
But the term neurosis has ac
quired wider significance than
that, as Webster meticulously
mentions it. is a "functional
nervous disorder without dem
onstrable physical lesion," such
as hysteria, migraine, epilepsy.
To confuse everybody's under
standing and give psychologists
more room to play around in,
Stcdman'a Medical Dictionary
(1933) defines neurosis as "any
form of nervousness" and speci
fies several varieties, from anx
iety neurosis (gloomy forebod
ings) to shell-shock,
"Shell-shock" went out -of
fashion with trench warfare and
has been succeeded by "battle-
fatigue." That is, for the dura
tion of the foxhole stage of the
fighting. Sometimes battle
fatigue was called "combat
fatigue." Since the cessation of hostili
ties the doctors have become
less sentimental again and in
clined to classify all such cases
as "psycho-neuroses" psych or
psycho meaning mind. Not that

know as well as I do that one's

havior, one's personality and in
deed one's character is consid
erably Influenced by one's ex
perience, by what has happened
to one in life, by the teachings
and training one has had, by the
example shown by parents and
others, by one's company, com
panions or associates. Thnt's
what the psycho-part of the
term "psychoneurotic" means
and that is all it means.
My advice to all persons who
hnve acquired a psychoneurotic
attitude or way of thinking Is
perhaps sterntyped but I sincere
ly mean it: Forget It. That Is to
ay, forget what you take the
term to imply. It's Just too bad
If you let your own peculiar no
tions about the significance of
"psychoneurosls" get you down.
I'm not fooling when I say we're
all more or less psychoneurotic.
When I get to worrying about
my own insanity I find consol

observing the greater insanity of
