The Pointers tipped the naval
club at Camp White, 27 to 20, in
a tilt at the Camp last night.

BIG LEAGUE MEET

Capacity Given as Reason
For Rejection of Bid.

Albert D. (Happy) Chandler,
finally at peace with the base
ball world, presided over his
first Joint major league meeting
today aware that in a year or so
he may be commissioner of three
big leagues.
The National and American
league club owners, closing out
their annual winter meetings
today, were expected to uphold
the minors' request to outlaw
bonuses for players, as well as
reinstate last season's night
game rule granting the local
team unlimited after-dark games
only If the visiting club agrees.
Bid Rejected
Surprisingly, the 16 owners
felt that some December, soon,
24 big leaguo owners might be
in the conference room at the
winter meetings, Including eight
major league members from the
west coast circuit.
The National and American
league yesterday turned down
the Pacific coast circuit's bid for
a "major league" label for 1946,
telling League President Clar
ence (Pants) Rowland to come
back next year when the west
coast loop might be better pre
pared to present a case.
President Ford Frick of the
National league, announcing the
owners' vote, said, "we believe
that eventually the Pacific coast
league will advance and become
the third major league."
Coait Triple-A
But Frick explained that the
Pacific coast, which was award
ed a triple-A classification at the
minor leagues' Columbus, O.,
meeting last week, "at present
has neither the income nor the
seating capacities to move into
the big show next season.
Rowland presented population
figures running up to 10,000,000
people in arguing his case for
six hours. But he knew the
west coast wasn't ready. He
didn't ask that the Pacific coast
league champ play the winner of
the World Scries. Nor did he
claim that the club members
were ready to pay major league
salaries, a difference of an
average of $8,000 to $10,000.
All "Pants"' wanted was a
label to tag the Pacific coast as
big league baseball grounds.

The Pacific Coast conference
returned to pre-war status to
day ns it announced a full
schedule for the 1046 season
that will see each major team
in the loop play at least seven
games against conference foes.
The scheduling of intersec
tional tilts against Notre Dame
and Ohio Stale by University of
Southern California: and a
Washington Slate journey to
play Michigan State at Lansing
also were announced.
Session Long
The conference faculty repre
sentatives took just 20 minutes
to approve the schedule which
graduate managers had spent
two days drawing up. But the
faculty members didn't break
up their session until long
after midnight.
What the trouble was In
their session still was a secret
today, but the best guess was
that It concerned the appoint
ment of n new commissioner to
succeed the Into Edwin N. Atlv
erton. Prominently mentioned,
if a new "czar" is elected, is
Frank Wlrkhorst, Just out of
the navy and a University of
California assistant coach in
the Stub Allison regime.
Moral Victory
The scheduling of seven con
ference games by most schools
(Washington, Oregon and OSC
slated right) was considered at
least a moral victory for the

Medford high school's bas
ketcers are undergoing nightly
drills in an effort to whip them
in shape for their season opener
with Eugene high here Friday
and Saturday nights.
The Axemen boast a strong
aggregation and will have the
experience of five games under
their belts when they invade the
Medford court. Eugene has play
ed four games with Portland
schools, winning two, and also
tangled with their cross-town
rivals, St. Mary's of Eugene.
They are sparked by a towering
center named Lovelace around
whom the team is built.
Coach Al Simpson has cut the
Tornado squad to 12 men but
said the boys will not be In Hie
best physical shape for the 'on
tests. Starting line-up will con
sist of Bob Watson and Jerry
Ross, forwards; Darrell Riggs,
center; and Earl Stelle and Jim
Cave, guards. Reserves will be
Jerry Hunter, Fred Stammcn
and Carl Reich, guards; LcHoy
House, center; and Don Waldron,
Bill Singler and Bill Werner,
forwards.
Grants Pass reserves and
Medford reserves wil square off
in a preliminary starting at 7
p. m. with the main game set
to start at 8 p. m.

Talent, Dec. 12 Talent's high
school basketball team cleaned
up on the Jacksonville Redskins
by a score of 22 to 17 in a rag
ged pre-season game played
here last night. Halftime score
favored the winners 10-7.
Talent reserves defeated a
similar Redskin team 9 to 7 in
a preliminary game.

have a different referee but he
faces the possibility of being
lowered to preliminary bouts if
he fails to make good.

Promoter Mack Lillard today as
last minute kinks were ironed
out of plans for one of the best
grudge bouts of the year. Bel
castro lost to the Gray Mask
and Jones in successive weeks
and then took a beating from
Jones before the battle royal
started last week and was the
first man pinned. Lillard, like
Belcastro, felt the Weed Assas
sin had received a raw deal and
consented to the return grudge

that he would have to win or
forfeit his main event rating, in
which case he would have to
