    PEAR INDUSTRY
FUTURE STABLE
Ashland, Dec. 11 The pear
Industry faces a stable future
while the citrus fruit industry
Is somewhat gloomy, Senator
Earl Newbry, pear orchardist
and packer, told members of the
Ashland Rotary club at a recent
meeting.
Newbry explained that citrus
trees come into commercial pro
duction in a few years while it
takes 10 to 15 years for a pear
tree to produce in commercial
quantities. Citrus acreage has
greatly increased while pear
acreage has remained rather
stable, he told the Rotarians.
Slight increase in pear acre
age has been absorbed in the
growing demand for pears which
has been created by a remark
ably successful advertising cam
paign sponsored by the pear
growers of Washington, Oregon
and California, where the vast
majority of the commercial busi
ness is concentrated, Newbry
stated.
Increase in markets, plus
rapid development of the gift
package business, enabled the in
dustry to maintain its stability
regardless of loss of foreign mar
kets during the war, Newbry
said.
Ripening program is the lat
est development, which combin
ed with growth of the cold stor
age idea, has eliminated glutted
markets and low income to
growers. By the use of cold stor
age, Bartletts can be marketed
up to November, Boscs and Co
mice to January and D'Anjous
to May, Newbry continued. He
said payroll of the industry in
this area is approximately $2,
000,000 and the income to the
Industry approximately $10,000,
000. Blight, for which no remedy
has been discovered but which
can be controlled, is the main

Philadelphia, Pa. (U.R) The
Tower club of Philadelphia may
not be the world's largest, hut
it is definitely one of the tallest
groups holding meetings.
Recently the club elected 31
feet and 10 inches of officers
filling only five vacancies. The
sole qualification for member
ship is a height of not less than
six feet and the new president,
Bronnie Sadowskas, is eipht
inches over the required mini
mum. His wife, whom he met
at the Tower club, is six feet,
three inches tall.
The other officers elected ore
equally tall. The vice president,
Edward Justice, is six feet eight;
the corresponding secretary.
Doris van Arstdalen, is six feet
one; the recording secretary
Miss Jeanne Riley, is exactly six
feet, and the treasurer Joseph
Hager, is six feet five inches tall
Contrary to general opinion,
the so-called standard gauge of
rail-road tracks is the same in
England and the United States,
namely 4 feet, 8V4 inches, meas
ured between the Inside running
edge of the rails.

The reports were taken from
state department files after Pat

Hurley asked the committee
to make the reports public. The
committee, however, decided up

Hurley himself designated the
