Effects of Malnutrition
The effects of malnutrition
have perhaps never been so
forcefully demonstrated as in a
report from France as to condi
tions there. Among the first to
be affected, as a result of the
deprivation of essential nutrient
elements, were the children. And
their condition is becoming pro
gressively worse. It is now com
mon In France to see cases of
rickets, skin infections and pel
lagra. Miliary tuberculosis and
caseous pneumonia are repidly
becoming more frequent. The
average height of children has
already dropped below that of
pre-war days. The workmen are
better fed but even their nutri-
, : I l i . n
itun is inaueijuam, riugietsivw
weakness among the workmen
is becoming more manifest. They
are also showing increasing sen
sitiveness to cold and to mental
depression. The body cannot
maintain its vitality and function
normally without adequate nu
trition. Wood and Coal Combination

BIRTHS
MANO To Maj. and Mrs.
Joseph, 105 Amy street, Central
Point. Dee. 9. 1945, a bol, 6'4
pounds, at Sacred Heart hos
pital. He was a very old gentleman,
that minister of the gospel in my
girlhood, and somewhere every
Sunday morning in his sermon
he was sure to quote, "I will
look unto the hills from whence
cometh my help." I liked the
sound of his gentle old voice.
Too young for philosophizing or
deep thinking, yet those words
had a subtle influence on me.
It was the custom of the
neighborhood young people to
go walking Sunday afternoons;
sometimes in groups, more fre
quently in couples. A favorite
walk was through the nearby
woods. There we would sit on
some mossy log and chatter the
inconsequential young people
find so consequential. Some
times we would carve our in
itials on tree; and we seldom
failed to drink from the little
creek flowing from the hill back
of the woods and through it. We
did this not so much because we
were thirsty but from some sat
isfaction we received at per
forming what we unconsciously
regarded as a rite. And though
we felt no conscious need to
"look unto the hills," yet Invar
iably before we returned home,
we climbed that hill.
Time passed and In other
places life sorely beset me.

Letter ?t -1
There came a period when It ao
buffeted me that courage seem
ed a quality which I could no
longer lay hold upon. And dur
ing the several years when I
walked constantly with tragedy,
the hills came to mean a refuge
to which I would go again and
again. Those hills rolling so
endlessly about me dwarfed
things below, dwarfed the trou
bles which had driven me there.
Far below, I could see people
walking, riding, mere pygmies
in the distance; too ineffectual to
bring either sorrow or joy to
any one. The tumult in my har
ried young mind would quiet
and again and again I found my
self repeating aa though it were
a litany, "I will look unto the
hills from whence cometh my
help."
I have "looked unto the hills"
all my life and they have never
failed me. I have gone to them
a broken thing, unable I thought,
to face one more day of living;
and have retraced my way re
vitalized and with a renewed
faith that life could be a fair and
lovely thing if I could but retain
the courage of the hills' benedic
tion. I have gone to them In a con
trary mood, when it seemed my
soaring spirits must surely
mount the stars. The hills were
there just the same. They tem
pered my too great exuberance
into something substantial; sol
idified the moment's exaltation
into lasting strength; gave to the
passing moment a reality I could
draw upon later when the cur
rent turned and bore me in the
opposite direction.
The old gentleman has long
since passed on but the hills re
main. Other generations will
follow, will suffer and need sur
cease and comfort. I pray they
too will have as I had, some
grand old man of God who will
give them the key to the com
fort they need in the words, "I
will look unto the hills from
whence cometh my help."
Twelve million bushels of po
tato chips were produced during
the last 12 months. An addition
al 5,000,000 bushels will be pro
cessed within the next year, ac
cording to the National Potato
Chip Institute, Inc.
