Boy Injured Eugene Shep
herd, 16, route 2, was injured
slightly Friday evening when
the car he was operating plung
ed over a bank on highway 99,
near Grants Pass, according to
an accident report filed with
city police. The report stated
that Shepherd's auto was forced
off the road to avoid collision
with an oncoming car.
Cars Looted A spotlight and
rearview mirror were stolen
Thursday night from a car park

Lake Creek, according to a re
port to city police yesterday.

Witness Sought The party
who witnessed the accident in
which Mary Sue Greene, 611
South Riverside avenue, was
struck by an automobile at the
corner of Cottage and East Main
streets about 4:30 p. m. Wednes
day is asked to telephone either
city police, 3535. or Charles R.
Greene, 2737. The witness was
driving an auto directly behind
the one which struck the Greene
girl, it was stated, and name of
the witness has been lost.

Rumor Refuted Postmaster
Frank DeSouza stated Ssturday
that numerous inquiriti had
been received at the postoffice
concerning the rumor that no
Christmas packages wvmld be
accepted for mailing after Dec.
10. DeSouza pointed out that
while early mailing is very de
sirable, the postoffice will, as
usual, accept packages when
ever they are presented at the
office.
In Hospital Mrs. Charles
Guthbertson, Chico, Calif., who
came to Medford several days
ago to attend the funeral of her
mother, Mrs. Alice Lewis, was
stricken with appendicitis Fri
day and underwent an emer
gency operation at the Ashland
Community hospital, friends re
port. It was said that Mrs.
Guthbertson was expected to
recover.

SHELLED; MARINES
KILLED, WOUNDED
New York, Dec. 8 (U.R)
American Marines shelled a vil
lage in North China last Tues
day when natives refused to
surrender two men suspected of
killing one marine and wound
ing another, an NBC correspon
dent reported from Shanghai
today.
The correspondent, Cal Hlrsch,
said that Maj. Keller E. Rock
ey, third amphibious corps com
mander directing the American
marines in North China, order
ed the shelling of the village
near Anshan, in Hopeh province
48 miles southwest of Shanhalk
wan. Hirsch reported that the
marines fired 24 rounds of 66
millimeter mortar shells when
the natives refused to hand over
the two suspected men. The
marines were identified only as
a corporal and a private first
class.
The broadcast quoted Rockey
as saying the marines had been
attacked while hunting near
Anshan. The private was kill
ed but his companion survived
a second blast of gun fire after
he had fallen, badly wounded.
After the attack, the assail
ants fled to Anshan and took
refuge there. Rockey issued the
villagers an official order, de
manding surrender of the at
tackers, but his order was ignor
ed, according to the broadcast.
