minor leagues, which openly
rebelled against Commissioner
A. B. (Happy) Chandler at their
meetings in Columbus, O., last
week, were scheduled to be
thoroughly "squelched" at the
annual major league meeting
which opens here Monday.
Big League leaders, checking
into overcrowded Chicago ho
tels today, were practically solid
in their prediction that the
minors will receive only a
smattering of what they asked
at Columbus.
The National and American
leagues will take up some of the
minor leagues' proposals tomor
row and are expected to: (1)
veto the minor leagues' bonus
legislation, and (2) deny the
Pacific Coast league its bid for
major league status, an attempt
to break the 40-year big league
monopoly of the National and
American leagues.

Rough Rufus Jones and Pete
Belcastro will meet in the top
main event of Thursday night's
wrestling card at Medford
armory, Promoter Mack Lillarid
said last night. Jones inked his
name to the contract last night
after considerable urging on the
part of Lillard. At Belcastro's
insistence for a new referee,
Norvil Stockstill of Talent will
be third man in the ring.
Belcastro requested the match
after being eliminated early in
last week's battle royal when
Jones smacked him on the chin
and cooled him with head butts
as the Weed Assassin was
climbing into the ring before
hostilities started.
Pete will be wrestling for
practically nothing since he had
to waive a largo percentage of
his share of the gate to get the
Detroit Darky into the ring with
him, Lillard said. Jones de
manded an impossible guaran
tee but Belcastro was more than
willing to give up some of his
share to make the bout possible.
The Gray Mask, scourge of
the local mat, will tackle an old
foe, Harold (Blood and Guts)
Davidson, in the other half of
the dual main event. Davidson
told Lillard he still believes he
can whip the' hooded one and
wanted another chance to prove
it.

General Manager William
Klepper of the Portland Beavers
today wired from Chicago that
he had purchased outright the
contracts of Jack Salveson and
Eddie Wheeler from the Cleve
land Club and Jim Bucher from
the Boston Red Sox.
Salveson won 24 games in
1943 for Oakland but remained
in a defense plant in 1944 and
1945, until he reported to Cleve
land in mid-season and did ror
lief work. Wheeler was draft
ed by Cleveland from San Diego
i: 1944, while Bucher joined
the Boston Club in 1943 after
having been purchased from
Toledo.
KAISER TO BUILD
PORTLAND TRACK

The Kaiser Company today
was awarded the general con
tract for building the club
house, grandstand and paddock
of the Portland Meadows race
track in Portland, designed to
be one of the most modern
tracks in the nation.
Work will start next week on
the construction of the 40C foot
long plant, it was stated by Gen
eral Manager Albert Bauer of
the Kaiser Oregon Ship Com
pany. General Manager Mike
Miller and Superintendent John
Hallett of the Kaiser Vancouver
yards will direct the racetrack
work.

its .first winter skeet shoot at
the club grounds at the Snowy
Butte Four Corners at 11 a. m.

The program will be made up
of practice events only but

for the future. New walks, a

committee to be in charge of all

wood, slowed down by his 52
years of age, was defeated this
afternoon by red-haired Don
Budge, 6-0, 6-1, in the semi
finals of the $5,000 world pro
fessional hardcourt, tennis
championstiips.
The other finalist In tomor
row's play will be Bobby Riggs,
of Los Angeles, who defeated
Fred Perry of Santa Monica,
6-2, 6-1, in the other semi-final
match this afternoon.
Tlie veteran Tilden was no
match for Budge. Apparently
wearied by yesterday's match
when he defeated Les Stoefen,
Tilden was unable to run after
Budge's power shots. Ho netted
the ball frequently, and won
only six points in the first set.
The match lasted only 25
minutes, and Budge was the
master all the time over the
legendary Tilden who was na
tional men's singles champion
for six years, starting in 1920,
and won the crown the last time
in 1929 before turning pro
fessional. Perry was always a threat in
the other semi-final game won
by Riggs. Eight of the 15 games
were deuced. Riggs, however,
outsteadled and outgoneralled
Perry to win.
