Wiliam D. Uoshaw
To Be Speaker at
Baptist Congress
William D. Upshaw, for eight
years a member of congress
from Atlanta, Ga., and in 1932
the prohibition candidate for
president, will be one of the
speakers over the week-end at
the Congress for United Evan
gelism at the First Baptist
Church.
He will be main speaker Sat
urday night at the youth rally.
Upshaw's deep-south old-fashioned
Georgia wit makes him a
unique speaker for youth ral
lies. The Georgian "orator on
crutches" was known as "the
most electrifying speaker in
congress," keeping Washington
"on its ear" by his fearless in
dictment of the "naughty drink
ing higherups." The Literary
Digest said in 1923, "to Con
gressman Upshaw belongs the
credit of awakening the con
science of America on the ques
tion of sober officials."
Upshaw will also be main
speaker at the Sunday night
service.
