Man Who Saw A-Bombs Work
Warns World Of Destruction
By Charles B. Degges ,
United Press Correspondent
Washington, Dec. 7 (U.R)
A man who saw the atom
bomb's work in Hiroshima and
Nagasaki warned today that the
world fares nightmarish des
truction under death - dealing

wavs to control atomic energy
Phillip Morrison, a nuclear
nhvslcist who served on an In
spection mission to the atomized

bomb was a "revolution in war"
which made it imperative to
prevent another armed conflict.
Chance To Build
"War can now destroy not
cities, but nations," he told the
senate's special committee on
atomic energy. "We have a

Conway W. Snyder, California
Institute of Technology scien

developing the atomic bomb,
said last night that "there it
no possible defense against
the atom bomb and the nation
which uses it first will win the
next war."
Snyder, present at the trial
of the bomb in New Mexico,
said only one-tenth of an

the "marines" be recalled from
China and the government stop
supporting Chiang.
Openly, thus, the professed
communists are advocating what
the left-wing periodicals and
congressmen are more subtly
promoting with greater power
and influence.
Now comes also Mrs. Roose
velt up to the fray. AP quotes
her as telling an audience at
Fort Devens:
chance to build a working peace
on the novelty and the terror
of the atomic bomb."
To that end Morrison advocat
ed a "working and realistic'
nollcy of immediate atomic
energy control based on "func
tioning, material agreements
among the great and smaller
powers."
Morrison, who worked at the
Los Alamos bomb Dlant and
helped assemble the final wea
pons in the Marianas, described
for the committee the devasta
tion he saw in Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. He gave a stark ac
count of how human beings died
under lethal "radium-like rays."
He said only about five or 10
per cent of the people within
1,000 yards of the explosion
escaped death from blast or
burn.
Many Die Later
Many people, he said, manag
ed to crawl uninjured from the
rubble of their demolished
homes, but later they died any
way from the deadly radiation.

USSIA has not started any
wars? Ask Finland. The
Finns were called to the kremlin
in October, 1939, and a slice of
their territory demanded in true
Hitler style. When they de
murred, Russian bombers swept
over Helsinki, November 30,
raining destruction on that city.
And later all others. Power-poor
Finland, ere destruction, sur
rendered March 12, 1940.
How about Iran today? Per
sistently Russia has declined to
allow Iranian troops into the
Russian-occupied zone of their
own country to stamp out a
communist revolution; therefore
permitting the revolution to suc
ceed, in expectation that a communist-controlled
state will be
set up there. Moreover this pres
sure is supposed to force out of
office the resisting Iranian gov
ernment so a Russian appease
ment clique can take hold. Is
this not agression? War? Con
quest? The familie s of those
daily killed refute Mrs. Roose
velt. I CANNOT ask: How about
China? The martial clouds
there suggest Russia is obliquely
working against Mrs. Roosevelt
and her peculiar befuddled
school of Armenian thought
lately at least.
Stalin's soldiers have reached
some sort of unreported agree
ment with China whereby they
will hold on to the Manchurian
cities until he can get big forces
in there, thus keeping the Chi
nese communists from capturing
them.
Furthermore Commissar Mol
otov insisted at the London con
ference the Chinese communists
we.e not communists, but large
ly farm peasants led by bandits;
and that Russia would rather
have stability in China now (this
from an official source off the
record here.)
MOW I do not wish to place
" any stamp of my own belief
or authority upon these Russian
inforences which are at variance
with "the communist party of
the District of Columbia," Mrs.
Roosevelt and left-wing and
new-deal congressmen and pe
riodicals. I merely say a vari
ance exists, and that their cam
paign to bend or break the
American policy is founded on
complete factual delusions.
Personally, I believe their
words show they are incapable
of objective appreciation of the
facts, but are guided in all their
reasoning by the commie line
domestically.
The American policy was sim
ply stated in the Anderson let
ter by Mr. Byrnes, pointing out
that we, as well as Russia, are
under war obligations to clear
Chinese territory of the Japs,
an.1 implying our assistance to
Chiang will continue until
China is cleared.
Thereafter, perhaps, the com
mies can come back and do in
China what they are success
fully concluding now in Iran.
One thing about Russian dip
lomatic technique proved by
history is that H need never
make simultaneous sense. It can
violate the treaty Mrs. Roose
velt's husband wrung from
Stalin guaranteeing the perpet
ual freedom and sovereignty of
Iran; and simultaneously abide
by its agreement with Mr.
Roosevelt to join the defeat of
Japan in China, even at the ex
pense of communits there. It can
break up the United Nations
procedure for peace at London
and then have its local party
advocate ousting the American
government in favor of Russia.
The left-wingers do not know
communism, Marxism or Rus
sia. They are being fooled, and
are trying to fool us all.
Babson Discusses New
Developments
New York, Dec. 7 (Special
Correspondence) I am in New
York calling on some of my opti
mistic friends who are hopeful
of very good times Just ahead of
us. In addition to the usual ar
guments as to the tremendous
backlog of orders, the billions of
cash awaiting an opportunity to
buy merchandise and the possi
bilities of atomic energy, they
throw at me various other things
upon which they have been
working. Some of them by no
means all I submit below:
New Ideas For Builders
And Manufacturert
Builders may soon be discus
sing the merits of new lumber
This will be made from pulp and
perhaps from a mixture of ex
celsior and Portland cement.
Also, a new cement is being de
veloped for use in concrete floor
ing which will be as strong but
much lighter in weight. It
should reduce the amount of
steel in buildings. There also is
a possibility of concrete which
will bend but not break.
Textiles will soon be treated
with a wax emulsion which,
when added to rinse water,
makes clothing water-resistant.
Also there is a new process
which makes cotton fabrics proof
against rot, fungus and miidew
without changing their appear
ance. A new asphalt or oil
treatment of sole leather, adapt
able to cemented shoes, may
greatly increase wear.
Housewives To Find
More Foods Available
The packaging of frozen foods,
which have become a "must" for
many housewives, is due for a
speeding up. Fishing vessels
and slaughter houses will be
equipped for the immediate pro
cessing and freezing of fish,
meats and poultry. A new can,
the sides of which are fiberboard
and the ends tinplate, may re
volutionize the frozen food in
dustry. Cargo and express will be
dropped by a parachute shaped
like half a baseball cover. So
we may expect to have ship
ments delivered in an improved
condition. An appliance manu
facturer tells of an electric
washing machine which, in ad
dition to washing clothes, has at
tachments by which dishes may
be washed, potatoes peeled, ice
cream frozen and even butter
churned!
Improved Transportation
And Communications
A bus company operating here
through my community has ap
plied for a helicopter franchise
helicopter, with a long fuselage
motors, counterrotating blades
and three road wheels. A PV-3
hallcopter, with a long fuselage
with a motor on each end, is
now being tested by the Coast
Guard and Navy. It carries 12
passengers. Regular planes are
now being made to travel over
500 miles per hour at an altitude
of 100 miles.
Printing is about to enter into
a new field. One of the most
recent uses for the process of
printing is to print electrical cir
cuits on heavy paper with lines
of metallic, conductive ink, as a
substitute for wires in low
priced radio sets. Television,
too, will soon become a part of
daily living. One New York de
partment store has announced
that it is ready to install three
television studios in its store.
New Invention
Sweeps Fog Away
Britain has developed and used
a method by which airfields are
cleared of fog through the burn
ing of many gasoline jets. The
process is known as "FIDO"
which means "Fog Investigation
Dispersal Operation." Germany
has hit upon a process for ex
tracting ethyl alcohol from wood
waste. Furthermore, we hope
to preserve aquatic life through
the use of a new method of dis
posing of paper-pulp-mill waste
which will make these sub
stances harmless.
Shortly after the first of next
year I will make a much more
complete summary of new devel
opments which have gone for
ward during 1945. Returning
veterans and others interested
in getting into new fields of en.
deavor should watch for this review.
I passage of peacetime compulsory
training legislation would be
bound to arouse fear of our
power, and suspicion of our mo
tives, in quarters where fear
and suspicion already exist."

military training in the light of
atomic warfare is as "obsolete

Charles F. Boss, Jr., executive
secretary of the commission,

78 COYOTES TURNED IN

Records of the county clerk's
