Chicago, Dec. 6 Tomahawk,
the grand champion steer of the
Chicago fat stock show, was sold
at auction today for a record
price of $10 a pound.
John R. Thompson bought the
steer, a purebred shorthorn ex
hibited by Calara Farm, Thorn
ton, Ia for Henrlci's restaurant
in Chicago,
The record sale brought Toma-
hawk's earnings at the show to
more than $12,000. Thompson
paid $11,000 for the 1,100 pound
animal. Tomahawk's prize win
nings totalled $1,300.
$8.25 Best Previous
The previous top sale price of
S8.25 a pound was paid at the
international live stock exposi
tion in 1929 for the grand
champion owned by Elliott
Brown, Rose Hill, la., then a
4-H club boy.
Calara farms is owned by Carl
A. Henkel, a building contractor
of Mason City, la. Henkel will
split the profits with Joseph
Duea, Belmond, la., who raised
the steer.
The pair refused a $500 for
Tomahawk when he was a six-weeks-old
calf.
The grand champion carlot of
15 steers, exhibited by Karl
Hoffman and Robert Storz, Del
mar, la., brought another record
price $2 a pound from
Swift and company. The carlot

Extravagant Government Leading
To Ruin, Says Republican Platform
Washington, Dec. 6 (U.PJ
House republicans today approv
ed a 1946 party platform calling
for federal economy and declar
ing that "extravagant govern
ment spending now advocated
by the administration in every
field can lead only to ruin."
The program must still be ap
proved by republican senators.
Then it will be presented on Fri
day to the GOP national com
mittee meeting in Chicago.
The platform's preamble says
that "today's major domestic
issue is between radicalism,
regimentation, all-powerful bur
eaucracy, class exploitation, de
ficit spending, and machine
netted Hoffman and Storz more
than $30,000. The previous rec
ord price 56 cents a pound was
paid last year for a grand champ
ion carlot also exhibited by Hoff
man and Storr.
The reserve grand champion
carlot 15 shorthorn steers
was bought by Swift and com
pany for 60 cents a pound from
Albert Frltzler, Sterling, Colo.

pany bought the champion An
gus carlot, exhibited by Schmitt
brothers, Delmar, la., for 50
cents a pound.
Forty-nine other carlots sold
for an average of 30 cents a
pound.

November 20, Mrs. Elsie Butler
told about several scholarships
which are being offered this

The Pepsi Cola Company is
offering a four year scholarship
to any school of your choice
with tuition and traveling ex
penses paid, and in addition
twenty-five a month spending
money. Each state is allowed
two scholarships, the winners
being chosen on a competitive

Gold Hill Veteran
Gets Citation For
Saving Crew, Ship
Comdr. Herman C. F. Beyer.
Gold Hill, was recently awarded
the Merchant Marino Meritori
ous Service medal for saving
many lives when he successfully
beached his ship, the USAT
Clevedon, when it became a rag
ing inferno following an explo
sion in the engine room in a
Alaskan port.
According to the citation.
Comdr. Beyer, then a lieutenant-commander,
prevented de
struction of important port fa
cilities as well as saving the
lives of many of his men by
maneuvering his ship away
from the docks.
Comdr. Beyer is now on leave
and is visiting his wife at their
ranch near Gold Hill. He was
recently commander of the USS
Hanley, a cargo ship.
Retired following 27 years of
duty with the Coast Guard.
Comdr. Beyer entered World
War II with the Merchant Marine.
