PROGRAM HIT BY
TRUSTEE OF AMA

member of the American Medi
cal Association board of trustees
today denounced President Tru
man's proposed national health
program and the Wagner-Mur-ray-Dingcll
bill as tickets to na
tional socialism.
Dr. Louis H. Bauer, Hemp
stead, N. Y., said in an article
published by the AMA Journal
that notwithstanding Senator
Wagner's claim that the bill is
not socialized medicine, it is just
that. It inevitably will lead to
national socialism."
Differ On Path
"We are all agreed as to the
ultimate aim" In furthering
medical care, but "differences of
opinion arise as to how this aim
is to be achieved," he wrote.
Dr. Bauer referred to an AMA
platform, adopted In 1 0 4 4,
which called for "availability of
medical care of a high, quality
to every person in the United
States."
Dr. Bauer said the medical
profession was "unalterably op
posed" to the Wagncr-Murray-Dlngell
bill for the following
reasons:
It is un-American.
It is inordinately expensive,
involving an 8 per cent pay roll
tax up to $3,600 of income, and
this probably Inadequate.
It sets up another federal
bureaucracy with a lay board
the social security board at its
head, to decide all medical mat
ters. Third Party Enters
A third party, namely the
government, is brought between
the doctor and the patient, and
the doctor Is responsible to that
third party.
A poor type of medical care
Is encouraged quantity without
regard to quality.
"Inefficiency, red tape and
political medicine will result if
the bill becomes law," Dr. Bauer
said.
"There are many who think
that legislators, those engaged
in social welfare and other lay
men can draw up a complete
program, have it adopted and
then expect the doctors to make
It work.
"It should be borne In mind
that, no matter what system is
eventually evolved in this coun
try for delivering medical care,
the doctor Is the one who is
going to have to deliver, it. It
cannot be delivered by a 'social
uplifter'."
MEETING POSTPONED
Phoenix, Nov. 30 The meet
ing for younger members of
Juvenile lodge which is held the
first Saturday in each month,
will be postponed until the sec
ond Saturday in December at
2 p. m.
ASHLAND STREET

Ashland, Nov. 30 The C
street extension project, calling
for cutting of C street from
North Pioneer street to the
Plaza area, was disapproved by
state highway officials who met
with city councilmen here Tues
day. No immediate action on the
disapproval was taken by the
council but indications were that
no protest would be filed.
R. H. Baldock, state highway
engineer, stated that if no pro
tests were filed bids for con
struction of a building to offset
part of the Claycomb Motor Co.
building, to be cut away in de
velopment of the Plaza project,
will be advertised at the De
cember meeting of the highway
commission.
JAPANESE PRODUCERS
ORDERED TO GET BUSY

anese producers who have been
hesitant In converting from war
to peace production were direct
ed by Gen. Douglas MacArthur's
headquarters todny to resume
production of civilian goods as
quickly as possible.
The producers were said to
have been puzzled over the
word "conversion" and hesitated
to start production for fear it
would violate the rule against
making war goods,

the turkey supper to be given
at the Phoenix Grange hall Sat
urday night has just made the
announcement that a dance will
follow the dinner and will begin
about 9 o'clock.
