THE FUNCTION
The ordinary visible tonsils
(faucial) and the tonsil in the
roof of the pharynx out of di
rect signi up
behind the
soft palate (ad
enoid body or
"adenoids )are
com posed of
lymphoid tis
sue. This Is a
soft fine mesh-
ed network
filled with
small round
cells. Virtual
iyLaxaeaaoef ly identical
Dr. Brady 1 y m phoid or
adenoid tissue .composes the
lymph nodes or "glands'
throughout the body for In
stance the "kernels ' one can
feci in the neck or under the
jaw when the nodes are In
flamed and also the red bone
marrow and that mysterious or
gan in the upper left region of
the abdomen, the spleen.
Because of the similarity In
the structure of all these organs
or tissues physiologists and phy
sicians believe they all contrib
ute more or less to (1) the man
ufacture or development of red
and white blood corpuscles and
(2) the protection of the body
against bacterial infections.
The faucial and pharyngeal
tonsils are subject to frequent
and striking swelling or en
largement as a feature of or a
consequence of repeated cri in
childhood. Cri (kree) being' a
coined term to indicate any
acute respiratory infection if
you do not know whether It
will prove to be, say, simple
acute sore throat (pharyngitis)
or coryza (acute nasal "catarrh")
or measles or scarlet fever or
whatnot and you never do
know in the early stage when
any such infoc'tion is most like
ly to spread to other persons.
This swelling or enlargement
of tonsils and "adenoids" is gen
erally a temporary condition. If
a doctor happens to examine the
child shortly after the child has
had such an . Infection or re
peated infections, he will find
the tonsils large and the pharyn
geal tonsil (adenoid body) too.
Too often such finding has led
to an operation to remove the
"enlarged" tonsils and adenoid
"growths". But if the doctor is
not so eager to operate and
keeps the child under observa
tlon for a season, subsequent ex
amlnation will generally show
that the tonsils have spontane
ously shrunk io their ordinary
size, provided the child has not
contracted any further cri.
Now I hope no one will infer
that I say tonsils should never
be removed. If the patient has
constant obstruction of breath
ing, constant mouth breathing
and constant tossing and chang
ing position and snorting and
snoring and choking at night in
the struggle for air, removal of
the enlarged tonsils is necessary
to give the child a chance to
grow and develop normally.
If the patient is constantly
hard of hearing or has recur
ring ear-aches or middle ear In
flammation, the tonsils and par
ticularly the adenoids must be
shrunk by X-ray treatments or
removed by operation.
Children under six are seldom
sufficiently coo peratlve to
make electro-coagulation (dia
thermy) treatment of enlarged
tonsils possible. If the patient
ca.i or will co-operate with the
physician, this method, in my
opinion, is always the method
of choice for the treatment of
simply enlarged tonsils or in
fected tonsils In persons of any
age. That Is, provided the phy
sician is skilled in diathermy
technique.

X-RAY PICTURES
The mobile X-ray unit's first
day in Jackson county was a
big one. Reports from Gold Hill
last night revealed that 346 per

turned away since 300 pictures
a day constitute a heavy sched

which continued throughout the
day, the 300 people registered,
appeared, and many extra peo

necessary. The time however
would not permit the Oregon
Tuberculosis association staff to
care for all' who wanted chest
X-rays in the one day allotcd to
Gold Hill.
The unit continued to Central
Point today, where the program
is in charge of Mrs. John Clark,
who is being assisted by Mrs.
