Halsey Urges Middies To Beat Army
In Saturday's Traditional Contest
Annapolis, Md., Nov. 28 U.PJ
It was Gen. Douglas Mac-
Arthur's orders against Admiral
William Halsey's orders today
concerning the Army-Navy foot
ball game, with Halsey's orders
carrying more vehemence and
MacArthur's appearance more
likelv to be carried out.
Halsey appeared at the naval
academy yesterday to present
Japanese war trophies to the
Midshipmen's Brigade, and took
occasion to tell the Navy foot
ball team to "fight like hell . . .
and get that game with Army
Saturday." West Point reported
that MacArthur had telegraph
ed his best wishes, regretting he
could not see the game, and
closed with a succinct "Beat
Navy."
Former Fullback
Halsey, who played on the
Navy team in the early 1000's,
said it was "bunk" to say that
the Army-Navy game engender
ed hatreds, but he advised the
players that "all friendships are
forgotten during the big game.
"I was the worst fullback
Navy ever had," Halsey told, the
Middies, but what 1 learned on
tle athletic field was of Inesti
mable value out tn the licet.
He said the football rivalry had
no effect on Army-Navy com
radeship In war.
Light Drills Booked
"Go In there and put every
thing you have Into it and get
that game!"
Halsey's appearance over
shadowed the actual practice,
which was held behind locked
gates. Coach Oscar Hagberg
said the secret practice was
necessary because well-wishers
took up too much time. It
was known that the Middies
worked on some "special stuff"
