Newsprint Pinch Will Grow Worse
During Next Six Months, Is Outlook

The one idea the paper-making
companies all agree on is
that little if anything can be
done immediately to put more
and thicker newspapers in read
ers' hands.
A new complication arose last
week when James B. Long, gen
eral manager of the California
Newspaper Publishers' associa
tion, announced that Crown Zel
lerbach, a major western news
print producer, notified publish
ers of a 20 per cent cut in de
liveries because of logging crew
shortages.
Long said many California
newspapers, with only a few
days newsprint on hand, faced
shutting down unless already
disrupted deliveries were main
tained. A spokesman for Crown Zcl
lerbach, however, declined to
verify Long's announcement.
"Shortage of logs and labor"
was blamed by the company lor
the present decrease in news
print supplies. Present strike of
60,000 AFL lumber workers In
the Pacific northwest, the spokes
man said, had not "seriously in
terfered" with paper making
operations.

9 p. m. for all Sunday school

Grangers received in contests.
Marie and Carlo Jansen were
obligated in the third and fourth
degrees by Master Ellis.
C. L. Rich, Bert Clute and
Oliver Itoundtree were elected
to the executive committee.
Applegate Grange officers for
1046 are to attend the joint in
stallation at Central Point on
Dee. 10 at 8 p. m.
Grange newlyweds, Mrs. Earl
Best and Mrs. Lester Stevens
were each presented with a gift
in token of Hie Grange members'
best wishes.

Army Post Contest

Pvt. Flossie M. Myers, Wac,
Jacksonville, Ore., was the win
ner in the army crafts contest
held here Nov. 17. She Is a mem
ber of the Convalescent Hospital
Wac detachment.
With every Wac stationed at
the camp eligible to compete, a
total of 147 individual item of
handicraft were entered.
Private Myers was winner In
the first class, originality of de
sign, for her wooden letter open
er in the design of an ink well
and quill pen.
Her prize was a $10 victory
bond.
