What worries me nowadays is
not whether a person should
take any ale or wine at sixty or
seventy, but what is happening
to the next generation, in the
damnable "cocktail" spots that
have apparently crowded out the
saloons or bar-rooms of the old
days. If you ask me, a cocktail
jolntis several degrees lower in
every respect than was saloon or
bar-room of the gay nineties or
even the wicked nineteen 'teens.
These nauseating places are
shrewdly calculated to facilitate
the practice of those degenerate
adults who take pleasure In per
suading youths of low I. Q. to In
dulge in a little drink.
The psychologists estimate that
30 per cent of the population
have low I. Q. A man or worn
an with the intelligence of a 12
year-old child may be a useful,
honest, happy citizen, success
ful in business, a fond and ad
mirable parent, a loyal friend
if he or she gets a fair deal. But
an individual of deficient men
tal development has little chance
of amounting to anything if he
or she is handicapped in youth
with alcohol.
Not all rl these young people
who begin drinking in youth or
early adult life become addicts.
Through fortunate circumstan
ces some of them are able to stop
indulging before the habit or the
craving or the feeling of need
for a drink becomes fixed. Even
so, there can be no question that
they suffer from what drinking
they have done. I mean their
physical, mental and moral
health cannot fail to be damaged.
In talks to follow I shall endea
vor to show Just how the physi
cal and mental health or effic
iency Is Injured or lowered by
alcohol. I'll leave the moral ef
fects to parents, teachers and
spiritual advisers.

The Northwestern Council of
Lumber and Sawmill Workers,
AFL, received an appeal today
from 25 veterans, asking the
union to release material so
work can be finished on their
partly completed homes.
In their petition to the strik
ing AFL lumber chiefs, the vet
erans asked the northwestern
council to designate yards where
material could be bought, point
ing out that all of the petition's
signers have served on foreign
soil and have expected to havei
homes under the G-I bill of
rights.
