QUITE FINISHED
of which this appears to be the
theme:
You say "I am bitter preju
diced against alcohol as liquor
or beverage and, if I had my
way, it would be available only
on bona fide prescription by a
reputable physician. " And yet
. . . you recommend that a per
son who has passed his or her
acme of physical development
should begin to dim his wits
with alcohol in order, as you
say, to make life easier for him
and for those with whom he
lives. . . . Why should anyone,
Just when he has arrived at the
age when he should know better,
take up the habit of tippling
which he has eschewed during
his youth? . . . not pleasant to
contemplate Grandpa and Grand
ma learning to be sottish instead
of saintly in their declining
years.
If any reader can show me a
clipping from this column to sub
stantiate the statement that 1 ad
vised people over 90 to drink a
glass of beer or wine once or
twice a day I'll present him or
her with a complete set of the
works of the devil of the con
ductor of this column. The evi
dence must show I said "people
over BO."
Whut I said was, In part:
"I believe life would be easier
for a good many elderly persons
to live, and those same elderly
persons would be easier to live
with, if they took some beer, ale
or wine regularly every day."
Nothing about young whipper
snappers of 50 there. In fact I
ducked the onus of specifying
precisely how old elderly is.
I'm still reluctant to brand peo
ple as elderly on the basis of
chronological age alone; I must
know the individual's physiolo
gical age.
