THE POWER
Anoxia, oxygen deficiency, in-,
sufficient oxygen supply to the
functioning cells of the bodily
organs and
tissues, is the
most frequent
immediate
causes of im
pair m e n t of
the power of
memory.
Anoxia oc
curs in various
circumstance s.
It is the ex
planation for
the unpleasant
Dr. Brady symp t o m s of
mountain sickness, air sickness,
the nausea, vomiting, headache,
sometimes diarrhea and always
great depression that one is like
ly to suffer some hours or may
be the day after one has arrived
at the high altitude.
Anoxia is the explanation for
the symptoms of carbon monox
ide gassing or exposure to air
slightly polluted with carbon
monoxide from any source.
These are well known scien
tific facts.
Excluding altogether the fa
miliar instances of failing mem
ory in grave or prolonged illness
and in advancing senile decline,
the direct cause of a noticeable
decline in the power of memory
in most cases among people who
are not seriously ill is in my
opinion anoxia.
We can determine by precise
measurement of the blood
whether a patient has anoxia
from carbon monoxide. But we
have no test sufficiently accur
ate to determine whether a pa
tient has an oxygen deficit in
blood or tissues from say feeble
or shallow breathing or from
poor circulation and failure of
the blood to carry sufficient oxy
gen to the tissues and cells.
So I advance the hypothesis
that the bad habit of costal or
chest breathing which most of
us have acquired through bad
education, plus the sedentary in
active life we lead most of the
time, keeps us close to the bor
derline of anoxia or oxygen de
ficit and hence subject to fre
quent failure of memory.
Haldane and Priestley in their
book "Respiration" (Yale Uni
versity Press, '35) say:
"As the slow onset of anoxae
mia" (oxygen deficit in the
blood) "advances, the senses and
intellect become dulled without
the person being aware pf it. ."
That's a fact to be remember
ed when dealing with a seriously
sick or aging person such pa
tients often say or do odd or ir
rational things because their
power of judgment is impaired
as much or "perhaps more than
their power of memory. This is
difficulty that arises in the mak
ing of wills and other disposi
tions. "The power of memory is af
fected early, and is finally al
most annualled, so that persons
who have apparently never lost
consciousness can nevertheless
remember nothing of what has
occurred. . . ."
I believe regular practice of
belly breathing as described In
"How to Breathe" (for copy send
25 cts. and stamped self address
ed envelope) improves the mem
ory by improving circulation
and preventing anoxia.

IF YOU COULD SEE the inside of your engine, you'd
know why it's important for a motor oil to resist
oxidation. You'd see hard-working, close-fitting mov
ing surfaces with clearances considerably less than a
hair's breadth. Yet between those almost-touching
surfaces you'd discover a thin, protective film of oil.
Or perhaps you wouldn't. Perhaps you'd see, in
stead, a thick, gummy substance on the oil screen.
That would be sludge ... the result of oxidation.
Sludge that prevents sufficient oil from getting into
places it's needed. Sludge that is the first step toward
lubrication failure and a big repair bill.
To retard sludge formation in new Golden Shell
