Strength In a few individual
issues Santa Fe, Chrysler, and
Warner Brothes Pictures fea
tured an irregularly higher stock
market today.
Prices receded further In the
early trading after yesterday's
late decline on profit-taking.
Then the list rallied over broad
front, aided by the features list
ed above.
The steels made a faint-heart
ed attempt at rallying and at
one time the leaders of the group
showed fractional advances.
These were whittled down later
on strike Indications. Chrysler's
gain of 2 points lifted the mo
tors a bit but no other issue of
the group had any such spectacu
lar rise. Ralls firmed with Santa
Fe although the rise was offset
by a 2-polnt decline in Norfolk

ROY G. SMITH NEW
WATER DIRECTOR
Roy G. Smith was elected a
director of the Medford Irriga
tion District from Division No.
3, succeeding George B. Dean.
in the annual election held
Tuesday at Oakgrove school.
Smith, well-known orchard own
er living near Jacksonville, has
resided in the county for some
30 years and has operated the
orchard for about 15 years.
Hold-over members of the
board are David Holmes, chair
man, and Eugene Cameron.
George B. Dean, retiring direc
tor, was elected in 1939 and has
been active in the district's af
fairs. J. M. Spencer, manager of
the district, pointed out today
that Dean has always advocated
consistent and business like im
provement of the system. "Dur
ing his two terms in office the
bonded debt has been materially
reduced and even during the war
years, with lack of material and
men, the system was maintained
and steadily Improved," Spen
cer declared. "The board Is proud
of the fact that the equipment
of the district was in such good
order at the beginning of the
wnr that little or no priorities
for equipment and replacements
have been needed."
