Bay Foes Rate Respect
Medford's District 2 title
game at North Bend will be
played Friday at 2 p. m., Prin-
cipal Lester D. Harris of Med-
ford announced today.
No reserved seats will be
placed on sale here, he said. It
will be necessary for Medford
fans making the trip to North
Bend to buy their tickets at the
field.

Meanwhile, Coach Al Simp
son's big task this week is to
convince his boys not to take
too lightly an unbeaten, untied
team that has averaged close to
30 points and has never been
held to less than three touch
downs in any game this season.
The North Bend attack Is
built around hard-hitting 180
pound Fullback Don Sfunders
and the scatback running of
Conrad Hagen and Garland
(Munk) Frye. However, Saund
ers broke a bone In his foot in
the Marshfield game last week.

Line Is Light
Altogether the Bulldog back
field has accounted for 175
points in their clean sweep of
six victories. Its line is light
but fast and aggressive, and
throws plenty of' interference
ahead of its ball carriers.
On the other hand, the Bull
dogs make no claims for defen-
sive greatness. They have been
. scored on by every opponent
except Marshfield a team
which, incidentally, has rolled
to but one touchdown all sea
son.
North Bend ODened with
26-7 win over Grants Pass and
followed it up by smearing Al
bany, 27-9.
Beat Reedsport 18-6
In one of their hardest fought
games, they downed Reedsport
18-6, and roared to a 3-u wain
nwav over Mvrtle Point. In I
free-scoring melee, they outran
Coquille, 40-25, and finished
their reffular schedule with an
impressive 25-0 win against
Marshfield.
It was announced today that
Frank Bashor and Phil Warren
will come down from Portland
to officiate the title playoff. Two
other officials, also irom j-ori-land,
remain to be chosen.

CLASH FRIDAY IN
TITLE STRUGGLE
Talent's title-bound gridders
will go after their 25th consecu
tive victory when they clash
with the unbeaten Eagle Point
Eagles for the Jackson county
six-man football championship
at Talent Friday night. Game
time has been set for 8 p.m.
Coach Roy Parr's team had
little trouble in disposing of
Rogue River, 44-13, last Friday
but are expecting their hardest
battle of the season from the
Eagles.
Eagle Point has not been de
feated this season, and the only
mar on its record is a tie with
Central Point.
Last Friday the Eagles show
ed plenty of power by whipping
the Prospect Cougars, 48-6, in a
tune-up for their title scrap.

By the luck of a coin, North
Bend gets the playoff game with
Medford for the district two
football championship and the
right to play Grant of Portland
in the semi-finals on Turkey
Day.
North Bend had a change
of mind, it seems, after they
finished their six-game regu
lar season undefeated, Al
Simpson, Medford mentor,
said North Bend officials flat
ly turned down an offer to
play Medford during the regu
lar season,
Simpson said Medford sched
ule makers knew North Bend
was going to have probably the
strongest team in the Coos
county area and tried to book
the Bulldogs but met with an
emphatic rejection of any game.
When it became apparent that
a playoff was going to be neces
sary, Simpson telephoned North
Bend school officials to see if
the playoff could be called off
and Medford declared the dis
trict champion on the basis of
their comparative scores. Med
ford has beaten three of North
Bend's foes far worse than the
Bulldogs accomplished thj job.
Simpson said he was told by
North Bend officials that they
didn't hope to beat Medford but
thought they could score on
them and thereby gain some
prestige. If they don't hope to
win the game, we would like to
know why they were so insistent
that it be played.
The Southern Oregon com
mittee, composed of R. E.
Jewell, Bend principal, Le
land Linn, Ashland superin
tendent and Carl Morriion,
Coquille principal, could have
declared Medford the district
champion, according to rules
of the athletic association, but
chose to take the easy way
out and call for a playoff.
The playoff with Grant, going
to the winner of the Medford
North Bend game, will also call
for a flip of a coin to decide
location if the two teams are
unable to agree on a site, which
they certainly won't be able to
do.
Rules of the association say
the coin is to be flipped in the
office of the secretary, Tom Pig-

Basketball Officials Needed
For Conference; Exams Soon
With the coming of basketball
season in both the A and B
leagues of the Southern Oregon
Conferences a problem of pro
viding a sufficient number of
officials for the many games is
facing the Southern Oregon Of
ficials Association according to
Roland Parks of Ashland, head
of the association. Superintend
ents, coaches and principals are
urged to contact interested men
so that these men can study the
rules, take the examination and
become credited officials of the
Oregon State High School Ac
tivities Association.
During the football season the
Southern Oregon Officials As
sociation has provided the offi
cials for over forty games. It
was necessary in numerous cases
for an official to work an after
noon B league game then work
again in the evening. All schools
including Yreka, California were
furnished officials by the local
association. Credited officials in
Southern Oregon were: Don
Laber, Roland Parks, Ralph Mc
Culloch, Earl Schilling, Les
Grant, George Bales, Eddie
Joanis and Norman Worthly.
With only two exceptions these I
men handled all of the games.

This year was one of the most
successful for Southern Oregon
officiating in years.
One big improvement noticed
in the officiating was the use of
the correct signals for all penal
ties. This enabled the fans to
know why the penalty was call
ed by merely studying the dia
grams on their programs. All
officials were able to give the
signals correctly on each deci
sion. Probably the biggest dispute
by fans, coaches and players is
over pass interference. No mat
ter how it is called the offended
teams' fans feel the decision was
wrong. This penalty must be
made on the judgment of the
official just as a baseball um
pire must call a man safe or
out on a close decision.
