The army Saturday ordered an
immediate investigation of
charges that 1.300 high-point
navy veterans were compelled
to do KP duty for 1.500 civilian
passengers aboard the transport

army newspaper Stars and
Stripes.
The paper said navy enlisted
men were required to wash
dishes and do other kitchen work
for a group of former Pearl Har

coffee is a coffee pot, evidence
of your birth, a common school
education, a little water, a hand
ful of freshly ground coffee and
a fire.
A watched pot never boils.
That's the secret of making good
coffee. Stand by to grab it off
from the fire the instant it
reaches boiling point. If you let
it boil for only a few seconds
you drive off into the air a con
siderable part of the aroma and
flavor and leave in the pot the
bitterness and astringency of a
brew of tannic acid.
Cold water or tepid dissolves
the aromatic flavor and holds it
in solution. For that reason it
is well to put the desired
amount of' freshly ground cof
fee in the water and let it stand
for a while, even over night, be
fore brewing. At least It doesn't
harm the flavor to let the pot
stand for a while when you
have it ready to go on the fire.
Whether io use any egg is a
question of personal preference.
If there Is a bit of egg white
handy and eggs are not too
scarce I like to use a dash of It
in the pot to Improve clarity or
to "settle" it. But I must con
fess I can't tell the difference be
tween good coffee made with
egg and good coffee made with
out it. It may be that a dash of
cold water added after the cof
fee has been brewed serves this
purpose as well as egg white.
Whenever I mention coffee at
all it seems necessary to say that
in my opinion, (1) children
under sixteen years of age
should not drink coffee, (2) most
adults may take a cup or two
of coffee daily, preferably at
breakfast or mid-day lunch time,
with benefit to their health and
livability and without peril to
their "nerves or digestion, and
(3) regular use or coffee is par
ticularly advisable for mature
adults with one or another or
ganic heart disease. Needless to
