Your Health and It's Care

SO YOU'RE TAKING
I suppose it ill becomes me to
v so. but I hate that term

then, some re

do not like
some of the

On analyzing
the matter 1
infer that my
dislike of the
Dr. Brady term is asso
ciated with the early days of
practice in Penn Yan. I was
pretty young and harrassed by
the fear that the country folk
would not have any confidence
in a doctor who had not yet cut
all of his teeth. So I tried to
compensate for my youth by
putting on a lot of dignity. It
seemed to work fairly well for
the first few weeks. Then my
brother Andy, who resembled
me, paid me a visit. While in
town Andy missed no bets in
the way of parties, dances and
shindies in all strata. The peo
ple at these affairs mistook
Andy for me, called him "Doc
tor," and when Andy got hep
to the situation he did cut loose
and had the time of his life.
Then he went home and it
tookme a long while after that
to scowl down the astonished
folks who, meaning to continue
on pleasant terms, greeted me
as "Doc". "Doc" and the kind
of dignity I had to wear or
thought I had to wear, are just
not compatible. Now, as you
may have guessed, I go without
my hat, overcoat and dignity all
the time, and I don t care
whether anybody calls me
"Doc" although I would not
so address a physician, dentist
or person with a doctorate de
gree. Only one vitamin, to the best
of my knowledge, ever produc
es an effect that can be measur
ed, felt or otherwise determined
within hours or days. That Is
vitamin A. In his book "Vita

tials" (Heinemann Ltd., London,

serves: "The writer has sometimes
given Newfoundland fisher
men, victims of 'night blind
ness', a single tablespoonful of
cod-liver-oil, with the gratify
ing results that they were able
to see on the subsequent
night. There are, one fears,
few other remedies in medi
cine so rapid and reliable."

up when the patient . takes
enough vitamin B-complex, par
ticularly riboflavin. But these
effects are from the vitamins

Some good doctors seem hon
estly satisfied that hypodermic,

the B-complex) gives a stimulat

effect that the same vitamin by

I'm sorry I can't agree.. I be
lieve two incidental factors are
responsible for the popularity
of vitamin injections that is.
for Individuals not too ill to take
vitamins by mouth. These fac
tors are (1) the credulity of the
layman in regard to anything
so administered and (2) the
eagerness of the doctor to keep
'em coming.
