Plans for the flower sale were
announced today by John Meals,
D.A.V. chapter commander.
Headquarters for the drive will
be the Allen hotel from which
a force of volunteer sales-girls

"The entire proceeds from our
annual Forget-Me-Not Sale,
Commander John Meals said,
"will be used for the chapter
rehabilitation program. To fur
ther rehabilitation of disabled
veterans the service officer of
the D.A.V. offers free assistance
in obtaining claims.
'The D.A.V. is incorporated
by an act of congress as tha of
ficial voice of all men and wom
en disabled in defense of the
nation. With casualties of World
War II already exceeding those
of World War I the work of the
D.A.V. with the returning sol
dier becomes Increasingly im
portant." The D.A.V. commander said
the "Forget-me-not drive has
been endorsed by President Tru
man who said "I sincerely hope
that the drive will be attended
by every possible success."
"I urge the support of every
resident of this community,"
Commander Meals said, "in the
continuance of our program on
behalf of the war's disabled.
The marching years, carrying
pain and suffering have passed
slowly for theRe men whose help
we needed and who today need
ours."
Oregon Steel Will
Aid Rehabilitation
Of France, Russia
Portland, Ore., Nov. 6 (U.R)
Oregon Steel Mills, a Portland
Industry, today announced sign
ing of contracts for $2,000,000
of raw steel bars to be used in
rehabilitation construction in
France and Russia,
The deal Is believed to be the
first cash steel purchase by any
foreign government for an
American firm since lend-lease
was cancelled by President Tru
man. Negotiations were completed
with the Soviets lust before the
Russians arranged a $400,000,
000 loan from the United States
to enable a flow of materials on
Russian vessels from Portland,
the principal lend-lease port to
Russia during the war.
The contracts will employ 200
workers for five months.

THREE KILLED ON

Klamath Falls, Ore., Nov. 8
(U.R) Authorities today were in
vestigating the deaths of three
persons in a freak automobile
train crash at a railroad crossing
five miles south of here.
The dead were Dewey Tuttle,
32; his wife, Frances, 25, and
Lucille Bishop, 21, of Sacramen
to, Cal., all potato harvest work
ers. They wero killed late Sat
urday when the automobile they
were passengers In crashed into
a standing freight train on an
Oregon California and Eastern
railroad cross. The driver of
the car, Donald R. Green of
Fayette, Mich., suffered bruises
and cuts.

Deschutes Lands
To Be Set Aside
For Recreation
Washington, Nov. B(U.R)
The house today passed a bill
setting aside certain lands in
the Deschutes nationnl forest In
Oregon as recreation areas and
excluding them from federal
lows to safeguard U. S. mining
resources.
Secretary' of Interior Harold
L, Ickes told the house public
lands committee that withdraw
al of the land, a potential source
of pumice, was not contrary to
public Interest.
"The lands have a present
value for recreational purposes
and there Is no information that
the pumice deposits . . are now
being developed commercially
or that they will be In the rea
sonably near future, Ickes said
The areas involved Include
Ea.st Lake and Pauline Lake,
fishing waters visited annually
by 20,000 persons, according to
the committee report.

For Anniversary
Because Klamath Falls stores
had no birthday candles, Med
ford Red Cross workers today
shopped for 170 candles to go on
a huge Marine corps birthday
cake for a celebration being
planned by men of the Marine
barracks there. Serving of the
huge cake will be part of the
170th anniversary celebration
there Saturday, Nov. 10, to
which the -general public is In
vited. Early this morning Walter
Bird, field director at Klamath
Falls, called Red Cross officials
here to ask if they could supply
the candles. White was re
quested, but a worker for the
camp and hospital council was
unable to find enough of that
color and substituted red and
blue for the remainder.

Ghoulish Lunatic
Cuts Heart From
New-Buried Body
Camden, N. J., Nov. 6 j(U.R)
Police hunted today for a "ghoul
ish lunatic" who broke through
a fresh grave to cut out the heart
of a newly-buried body.
Camden County Coroner Jos
eph L. Myrtetus, who burled
Mrs. Marion Stoackman, 54, Fri
day, said that the woman's heart
had been cut from her body. He
said that other bodies in Calvary
cemetery may have been violat
ed, but the graves had been re
filled in time to escape discov
ery. "This time," Myrtetus said,
"the ghoulish lunatic apparent
ly was frightened before he
could refill the grave and he
must have run away with the
heart clutched In his hand."
Sgt. Archie Harris
Passes in Service
Sgt. Archie O. Harris of Mcd
ford has died following service
in the European war theater ac
cording to a release from the
War department. The young
man's wife, Eleanor J. Harris,
resides at 1114 North Central
avenue, and his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. O. W. Harris, at Route 1,
box 542-A.
Harris, who had been In the
army reserve from 1939 to 1941,
was inducted into the regular
army In August of 1943. He
was employed by the army engi
neers at Camp White at the time
of his induction. The sergeant
would have been 25 years of age
next month.

Roosevelt Parent -Teacher
association will hold a "Back
To School" meeting Friday. Par

DISPLAY OF DOLLS
An unusual and - Interesting
display of dolls In foreign dress
will be one of the main attrac
tions in the boys' and girls' de
partment of the Medford li
brary, in honor of Book Week,
Nov. 13 to 17.
The dolls, loaned by Mrs.
Anne Davis of Medford, include
Guatemalan miniatures, an Ap
ple Head Indian, dolls from Rus
sia, China, Italy, Mexico, Ja
maica ,and many other coun
tries. Unusual ones include a
"Wishbone doll," "Sacajawea,"
made of leather, a "Hickory Nut
Head," "Grandpa Snazzy," A
Gay 90's couple, and a clown.
Possibly the most interesting
dolls to be shown are the dress
ed fleas from Mexico. In Mex
ico, clever fingered natives fash
ion regular little dolls of these
fleas. Two of them dressed as
Mexican peons, will be shown
undpr a magnifying glass. The
public is cordially invited to
visit the Boys' and Girls' de
partment of the library anytime
during the week, according to

Seven Hard Lashes

A husky county jail guard dealt
seven lashes with a strap today
across the bare back of Freder
ick Randall, 19, a convicted wife
beater. Randall made no outcry. Po
lice Magistrate John B. Hopkins
ordered the whipping after find
ing Randall guilty of beating
and choking his wife, Evelyn,
17. Randall was not required to
serve out the remainder of a 10
day jail sentence.

A policeman testified that she
said Randall had beaten her five
times previously.

Japanese imperial household de
nied today that an American
soldier rode Emperor Hirohito's
"famous white stallion" and
would ride him again in a big
GI rodeo next Sunday.
The Pacific Stars and Stripes
reported today that Lt. Dick
Ryan of Los Angeles, producer
of the rodeo, had ridden the Im
perial mount "Hatsushimo or
White Frost."
